Existentialism by Adrian Marquez

“I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth" - Umberto Eco
If life on this planet is coincidental, without the hand of intelligent design molding and shaping us, does that make our life meaningless? Is the universe against us in our search for answers?

Enigma: a person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand.

When we encounter the idea that our existence is a purely adventitious one, we view the world as being pointless. Therefore, they don’t do anything but see the negative, when in reality there’s vast amount of substance to live for.

Giving life meaning through connections you make with people and pursue something that fulfills you.

“Take stock of what you really enjoy doing, what your passions are, what your interests are, what kind of people offer you a ‘goodness-of-fit.’ Then give yourself permission to pursue the activities and the people to find the place and group that offers a true sense of belonging” - Oliker

Finding what you really enjoy doing gives you a sense of community and bonds with other people.

By having a deeper connections with people than just surface level, really sharing with others your emotions; your aspirations, fears, and your more sensitive side, by opening yourself up and being vulnerable, you open yourself up for others, and perhaps they will do the same for you.
"For years, too much feeling seemed like a curse I carried, but when I started writing … that depth and intensity of emotion became an incredible gift …" - Gwyn

Using your emotions, your anger and your confusion for the world, you can turn that around and use it to your advantage. It can give you inspiration for art and connect you with people who also have this angst built up in them.

These things you can do to make yourself feel connected to others, to give you a bit of a feeling of belonging to something more than just yourself, but how you feel and what you think is also important to how you feel within society.

Life given meaning by your own interpretation.

“Through images of rebels and outsiders they can have their own experimental identities” - Coughlan

Through exploring your own identity, you will find what makes you feel complete. When you search within you and find what motivates you; singling out your flaws and strengths, you will be able to fortify your talents and work on the areas you are lacking in.

Find something you don’t like about yourself and set a goal to change it. Having pride in who you are and your attributes is an important skill. Life isn’t about who made you, it’s about who you will become and how you will make it happen.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad / take a sad song and make it better … and anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain / don't carry the world upon your shoulders ” - The Beatles

The point of view you have in your life also determines your own emotional well being. If you have negative thoughts, then that is only gonna put more weight on your shoulders than whatever problem you may have. Thinking positively about your situation helps bring a positive attitude towards your life.

In the end, we are sentient beings able to produce thought, and like everybody else, we have questions. Questions about existence and the end of existence.

Then what’s the point of doing anything?

Others may believe there is no point in our existence, and there is nothing to do about it, but according to Kielburger, “when we find the courage to take on consistent and small but personally meaningful responsibilities through what we say, do, feel, and think, life becomes more an opportunity than an obligation”

The point in doing anything becomes that it gives your life meaning. Without any tasks to concern yourself with, your mind wanders aimlessly without a destination. You end up losing track of yourself and others.

If instead you think about life as this big challenge you have to overcome, as an opportunity to learn about yourself, then it is worthwhile to live.

Some may say, “... everybody knows life isn’t worth living” (Camus, The Stranger). But on the contrary, I believe that instead, we should, “... want to learn something about [ourselves] because the world is real and is really ending” as noted by Ersatz.

Even though some may evaluate the notion that there is no particular point for human existence, it is detrimental to one’s viability unless they can give themselves a singular, unique purpose.

It is solely one’s responsibility to manifest their own values, goals and dreams in order to maintain a healthy and optimistic view on existence.

Learning from yourself and others, you come to see that there is more to life than you might think at first glance.

When faced with the absurd conviction of existential nihilism, one could begin to drive themselves to the brink of despair or even depression, focusing on a downward spiral of pessimistic ideology, without bothering to give a second thought to the silver lining in every cloud. Life has meaning, as long as you put effort into making the right choices, including your involvement in social and emotional endeavors.
The chances of you being alive are 1 in 102,685,000, 10 followed by 2,685,000 zeroes. That's a miracle. Are you just going to throw away the only opportunity you have to live? This is your chance to experience what the world has to offer, to make the most out of your life. Take this opportunity given to you by pure luck, and use it to your advantage instead of wallowing away in meaningless self-pity. Enjoy what little time you have on this earth; seize the day, get to know yourself, and better our planet before your body becomes one with it and the rest of our universe.
