Giving Voice to the Silent Burden: Maternal Mental Health Technical Consultation Partner Engagement and Social Media Toolkit

OVERVIEW:

The perinatal period, between pregnancy and up to two years after birth, is a particularly critical time to identify and address mental health concerns since this period is associated with elevated incidence of mental disorders. Common perinatal mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and somatic disorders, not only pose significant and lasting implications for women’s health and quality of life, but also newborn and child health and development that have intergenerational impacts.

Despite evidence that effective psychosocial and health promotion interventions exist, MMH remains a silent burden that has not yet received the political and programmatic attention it warrants from the global health community. This three-day technical consultation will bring together members of the maternal, newborn, child health, nutrition, and mental health communities to collaborate and inform the path forward for MMH to ensure that pregnant and postpartum women receive the respectful and nurturing care they need and deserve. This consultation will inform the efforts to strengthen the MMH research agenda, implementation approaches, and integration within health programs and services.

The Technical Consultation is structured to:

1. Describe current evidence regarding common perinatal mental disorders (CPMDs), contributing factors, and influence on maternal and newborn/child well-being.

2. Analyze implementation approaches, existing evidence, and evidence gaps in an effort to identify best practices for scale-up.

3. Foster inter-sectoral collaboration between reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCAH) and mental health stakeholders to promote evidence-based, gender-transformative, person-centered care.

4. Discuss implications and related opportunities of integrating CPMD programming into primary health care (including RMNCAH platforms) across the continuum of care.

5. Identify next steps for global, national and local RMNCAH and universal health coverage stakeholders to advance maternal mental health efforts in alignment with the WHO Mental Health Action Plan.
