Bowdoin women's soccer 2019 season preview

The Bowdoin College women’s soccer team returns twenty-four players from last year’s roster as the Polar Bears look to extend their string of postseason appearances in 2019.

2018 Recap

The Polar Bears had a roller-coaster season that saw the team sitting 5-3-1 at the beginning of October, but an 0-3-1 stretch dropped the squad out of playoff position with a week left in the regular season. Bowdoin bounced back with a key win against Conn. College and netted a 1-0 victory over Tufts in the regular season finale to earn its 19th consecutive NESCAC Tournament appearance. The Polar Bears dropped a tough 1-0 decision to eventual NCAA runner-up Middlebury in the NESCAC Quarterfinals to finish the year 7-7-2

2019 Preview

Head Coach Brianne Smithson returns nearly her entire roster with the exception of two graduating seniors from last year’s squad. That returning corps includes a number of players who saw considerable time last season, including four rising seniors who played in every game a year ago in forward Morgen Gallagher (four goals in 2018), midfielder Kate Rusk-Kosa and backs Sophia Lemmer and Lizzie Sands.

Junior Lynn Farquhar will also look to be a returning presence in the midfield while sophomore Jamie Lau enjoyed a solid first-year campaign last fall on the back-line for Bowdoin. Sophomore Penny Rocchio owned a 0.77 GA in her rookie campaign and will look for additional time between the pipes for the Polar Bears.

On the Schedule

The NESCAC is unquestionably the top league in Division III women’s soccer as both NCAA Finalists from 2018 were conference squads. Bowdoin will host both of those teams this season; Middlebury on September 14 and Williams on October 26. The Polar Bears also have conference home matches against Colby (Sep. 10), Wesleyan (Sep. 21) and Hamilton (Oct. 5) in addition to non-league home games against Endicott (Oct. 1) and Maine Maritime (Oct. 19).
