What is Matter? By: arianna Rogers

Matter is the physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit; (in physics) that which occupies space and possesses rest mass, especially as distinct from energy. Matter is divided into two groups, pure substance and mixture. Pure substances are elements or compounds and Mixtures are homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Pure Substances are elements and compounds

Elements can not be broken down anymore because they are only made up of their self. Some examples are gold, Iron, lead, and oxygen.

Compounds are a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture. Some examples are common salt (sodium, chlorine), marble ( calcium, carbon, oxygen), and hydrogen chloride (chlorine and hydrogen).

Mixtures are homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Homogeneous a mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout. Examples are salt water, gas, brass, and ruby.

Solution: A homogeneous mixture has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout. Many homogeneous mixtures are commonly referred to as solutions. A heterogeneous mixture consists of visibly different substances or phases. The three phases or states of matter are gas, liquid, and solid. Heterogeneous is denoting a process involving substances in different phases. Examples are salt and pepper, chocolate chip cookies, and Twix candy bar.

Heterogeneous: Of or denoting a process involving substances in different phases

Suspension: A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase some time after their introduction. We apply the word 'suspension' when particles are big enough to eventually settle. If the particles are too small to ever settle, they are said to form a colloid.

Colloid : A colloid is a homogeneous solution with intermediate particle size between a solution and a suspension. Colloid particles may be seen in a beam of light such as dust in air in a "shaft" of sunlight. Milk, fog, and jello are examples of colloids. In contrast a suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of larger particles.
