SVALBARD

A voyage to a world of ice, during the midnight sun of the first two weeks of July of 2016. A special 10 day expedition, around the Svalbard archipelago, belonging to Norway.

An adventure lived from the hand of Wild Photo and with two great guides: Eirik Grønningsæter (biologist and photograph, winner of the WPOTY) and Audun Lie Dahl (guide y photograpaher).

We boarded in Longyearbyen, the main city of Svalbard, in the M/S Malmö. A small boat constructed in 1943 and reconditioned a few years ago for arctic expeditions. 12 persons only (plus the two guides) with the ship, Malmö we sail around this stunning environment with endless sea ice having no rush.

Just after the departure, due to the weather info, the boat set course directly toward the arctic ice floe. Three days of good weather was more than enough window to arrive to the ice floe and search for Polar bears in the drifting ice. The travel lasted one and a half day, and during the way we did enjoyed the arctic landscape and we did photograph several arctic birds: fulmars, puffin, guillemots, little auk, several species of seagull, ... The water of the arctic ocean was very calm and cold during part of this travel, reflecting a deep blue color.

Before we headed north to the arctic ice sheet and left behind the coast line of Svalbard, we stopped in a small island that even does not appear in many maps, outside of the normal tourist cruise pathways. It is a little long island, after this there is only the Arctic Ocean till its freezing. The last land refuge for the fauna ... And it did not disappoint us: we saw and photographed 7 polar bears on this little island, with the great sweet surprise of the trip: a female polar bear with two cubs of the year.

A mother polar bear is always taking care of her cubs and she tries to keep them safe when a male is near, avoiding in this way that the male can kill the cubs to force her to mate again, or just because he is hungry. The cubs are not safe until they are 2 and half years, for that time they start to feed up by themselves. Till then, it is the mother who feeds the cubs by breastfeeding first and with hunted seals afterwards.

The polar bear does not hibernate as their land brothers. During the arctic summer they reduce their activity to the minimum, moving slowly guided by their incredible sense of smell which it allow to identify an odor 20 km far away, for that reason we see them smelling up many times, it is like a radar. And also for that reason they are very curious too and they bring closer to know new things, as their main motive is to seek for food. In this play, thanks to the skill of our guides, we could get closer from the zodiacs, as near as less than 4 mts.

One of my personal goals for this trip to arctic was to be able to see with my own eyes how a polar bear enjoy himself in the snow ... nothing is like seeing these majestic animals enjoying themselves in the snow ... and on this trip I got it. For me, this image justify the travel.

The polar bears are exceptional good swimmers and they can swim over 500 km in the seek of the ice floe where it does habitat their natural food: the ring seals. While they are waiting for the ice to return, they seek on land for other food sources, moving between islands guided for its sense of smell.

All these photos of the polar bears were taken during the arctic night, a night without darkness. We did go down from the ship to the zodiacs at 00:30 am and like the photographic journey was so good, we did come back to the boat at 07.30 am, just in time to enjoy the breakfast.

Finally we did arrived to the arctic ice sheet after several hours of sailing, as soon as we did found the first ices, it was stablished 24 hour turns for seeking polar bears over the ice. Sailing hours running through the ice floe ... waiting time ... time to photograph the landscape.

The global warming is more noticeable in this part of the world than in other places. The average increment of the temperature in the last two decades has reached 8º C and each year the ice edge is retreatiing more and more in summertime to the geographic north pole. The ice is melting, and this year the North Pole is a water mass. Several expeditions has been cancelled. The arctic species are in extinction danger as each time they have to run/fly more distance between the ice where they feed and the land where they reproduce. The waters become less salty and the plancton is changing ... all in one is a chain which not only it will carry the extinction of several arctic species as the polar bear or arctic birds; it will carry also changes to the climate that we can not calibrate at this moment. Here the Gulf current meets the arctic masses what cooling down the system (it´s like a water lung), generating other interactions like El Niño. Ignoring this interactions only will carry problems in the future with possible climate changes more aggressive ... It is necessary to support international actions that preserves the Arctic and slow down the emissions of greenhouses gases.

After several hours of scouting we localized the first two polar bears on the ice ... but they were very elusive. As we did aproach slowly with the boat, they start to run away to a ice floe furter away from us ... the guides decided not to stress them with a pursuit and we continued seeking for other polar bears.

Sailing north in the arctic ice floe, we arrived until where the ice blocks are only one mass: we did reach the latitude of 81º 39" N, just 961 Kms from the North Pole, today a water mass, due to the fact that the floor is situated to 144 mts deep.

Finally we had our reward: we localized a polar bear that has hunted a harp seal and he has started to eat it up. We arrived slowly and after two tries to move to another distant ice block, the polar bear did accept our presence reluctantly. The main food of the polar bears are the ring seals, specially the fat and the soft parts, they do not eat the meat part. With the food obtained from an adult seal, one polar bear can stay two and half months without to feed again.

After our arctic ice floe experience, we headed east to Storøya island, famous to be the island of the walruses. The weather had changed, the wind blowing from south and the fog banks did appear. We did go down to the zodiacs and we found walruses playing in the water, but after sailing around the island, we did not found walruses in land, our objective. Instead, we did found three new polar bears in this island, and several arctic birds as arctic terns mainly.

Afterwards we did round the Austfonna glacier, the third biggest glacier in the world. It is impressive to see this huge mass of ice that goes into the ocean. More than 8.100 Km2 of surface and 180 Kms of coastline, what it means to be the greater generator of big icebergs in Svalbard.

We followed our route to the Hinlopenstreet, the place where many arctic birds like guillemots and little auks finds their food, the fish. They fly away many kilometers in big groups from their nests for fishing here.

Afterwards we went to another island where the walruses usually stay, Wahlbergøya. And here we did found walruses in land. The walrus eats a huge amount of mussels and afterwards they stay 5 days resting in the beach to digest them. We did take advantage of this fact and we did approached them in land very slowly without disturb them. I could photograph walruses at less than 3 mts of this big mammals, which weight more than 800 kgs. The rose parts over the skin like blisters, mainly in the neck and chest, are a secondary sexual difference of the males.

The island of the birds is known as Alkefjellet, it is a doleritic cliff which rise up as a great fortification full of bird nests, mainly Brünich´s guillemots and Kittiwakes. These formations does not have the perfect hexagonal form of other basaltic formations like in Iceland or Ireland, but they sustain the large column estructures. The upper part of the island is covered by snow and ice, forming waterfalls falling between the rock formations.

Near these cliffs there are always arctic foxes, ready to take the most they can find. They patrol the lower parts of the cliffs to check if there is any chicks fallen from the nests or even climb the rocks to steal eggs from the nest. That was the case of our fox

Finally we head up to the area of blue ice glaciers, we kept the hope about finding a polar bear in blue ice, for that reason we did go across diverse fiords and bays. The first one was Hamiltonbukta, in stead of polar bear we found seal.

During the sailing, a part of the fiord was totally calm, no wind and with a nice green turquoise color which did reflect like a mirror of the mountains and the glaciers.

Our next visit was to the Smeerenburg glacier, a beautiful glacier. In this glacier we found several arctic birds: fulmars, guillemots, arctic tern and kittiwakes. Sliding over the water with the zodiac in this blue world is an indescriptible sensation, only broken by the loud noise of the glacier braking and calving

The sun is above the horizon the whole day in this period of the year in Svalbard, there is no night, always there is daylight until August 21th. A strange sensation for those like me that we usually have nights, sunrises and sunsets. But when the clouds appear and filter the sun in the horizon, the lights change totally.

Our next stop was the Magdalenafjord, a fiord where we went to land and climb the rocks to see the little auks, they come here in big groups for nesting, just flying over you and stopping in the rocks.

Here in this area where was filmed the famous BBC documental The Hunt, where an arctic fox jumping in the border of the rocks did capture in flight a little auk. The place and the actors are the ones below.

In this same fiord we saw a little colony of harbor seals what we could photograph agreeably from the zodiacs.

We did stay one day in the amazing Kongsfjorden, the Fiord of the King. Only its name can speak of the majesty of this fiord. At the end of this 26 km long fiord are the Kronebreen and Kongsvegen glaciers. These glaciers stand out for having the bluest ice we have seen, with icebergs of translucent deep blue like blue topaz.

A deep blue world of an extremely beauty did open during our way in zodiac by the fiord. A subtle and fantasy world in constant modification, which is vanishing to our eyes as it is melting ...

Just above a complete panoramic view of the Kongsfjorden from one of the highest points of the cliff where the kittiwakes are nesting.

Here again, the arctic fox seek for their portion in the bottom part of the cliffs, while the Reindeer graze the green herbs that grow up in this area.

The Kongsfjorden still has kept some surprises for us ... sailing by the glaciers we found a seal with a strong orange pigmentation in the face with a nice backlit. The clouds did covered the sky and only the horizon was visible like a sunset.

And finally the day we had to come back to Longyearbyen. We left the Kongsfjorden and we went to Poolepynten, the last walrus colony on this expedition. We went to the beach but there were only a few walruses without too much photographic interest. Although the arctic tern gave us much play in this beach and the landscape too; the photo at the very beggining of this web page with the triangular house to dry skins in old times was taken here.

However during our stop at Poolepynten, we saw in the strait two blue whales. We did pack all our equipment and we went to the sea for sailing with the zodiacs between the whales. All an adventure and a challenge to get in focus, as the sea was rough and the zodiac did not stop to move. It is very impressive to sail nearby this living submarine, the biggest mammal of the earth, 36 mts long.

Lastly we arrived to the Isfjord again and we stopped at the Ymerbukta glacier, where we went down to the zodiacs again to spend our last cruise hours before returning to Longyearbyen

Looking back from the stern of the ship, it looked like the fiord want to say goodbye to us with fantastic light ... and in this way this travel has finished.
