J.R.Briggs Family Newsletter September 26, 2018

Thursday, September 27th Is A Half Day. Parent Pick-Up at 11:50

The 4th Grade Lego challenge made students work on giving using precise language.

Where has the month gone?

Sneak Peek, check. Opening day for staff, check. First day for students, check. Kindergarten day one, check. Picture day, check. Fire drill, check. We have run through this list and so much more just in the first month of school. It has really been a blast to see how much we can accomplish as a community in such a short time. This Friday we will continue our journey as we embark on this year's edition of Ready, Set, GLOW! We are excited to host such an event and to welcome you to join us. THIS IS A FAMILY EVENT, NOT A DROP OFF EVENT. CHILDREN MUST HAVE A REGISTERED ADULT WITH THEM TO PARTICIPATE. FAMILIES ARE TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE WITH THEIR CHILDREN IN THIS EVENT. You are responsible for your children at this event. Safety is important, as it will be getting dark. Strollers are welcome, no pets please.

Parent conference sign-ups are available online. If you follow the link below, you will be directed to our school's site. Once there, please choose the teacher you wish to meet with and the time that works best for you.

Our annual Walk To School Day will take place on Wednesday, October 10th. Students that ride the bus will get dropped off at Oakmont. Parent drop-offs will also take place at Oakmont. We will provide bus transportation for students in Extended Day from JRB to Oakmont as well. This event allows us to feel a great sense of community as multiple schools will be walking with each other. It also lets us show that healthy choices are always an option. Please be on the lookout for a flyer in the near future with greater details.

MATERIALS Still NEEDED FOR GRADE 5 PROJECT

In September and October, all fifth-grade classes are working on Operation Welcome Mat, an effort to create “habitat enhancements” for our school nature trail, vernal pool, and science garden. We are looking for donations of the following supplies:

  • Mason jars
  • Gravel
  • Wood chips
  • Grape vines
  • Stepping stones, tiles, or pavers.

Please contact Mrs. Davis at tdavis@awrsd.org to arrange for drop off. Thank you!

Our Nature's Classroom Genevieve's Fundraiser is due October 3rd. The money raised in this fundraiser will help defer the cost of Nature's Classroom (fifth graders only), the NC scholarship fund, and the JR Briggs Enrichment Fund.

What a treat! The PTA will be hosting a staff appreciation lunch Thursday October 11th. They are still looking for help if you are available. See the link below.

Good and bad news: Our Chorus registration is now closed, but that is due to the huge numbers that have already enrolled!

Our students and staff often use yoga in the classroom to invigorate or relax their bodies on a regular basis. Young At Heart Studio in Westminster is offering some yoga opportunities for students from pre-k through middle school. If your child has an interest in pursuing yoga outside of school, please review the attached flyer.

Attention Parents of Skiers and Snowboarders!

There will be an informational meeting for STUDENTS ONLY on Friday, October 5th at 8:45 in the cafeteria for those that are interested in Ski Club. Ski Club starts on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 and runs for six weeks. Ski Club is for grades 3-5 only. If you have any questions please feel free to email Gina McCullin at ginerm@aol.com.

MCAS results from last year's spring tests should be coming home soon. The district and school data will be released on Thursday, September 27th. Individual results will be sent home with students once we receive them from the state. There will be a special email on the day they are to go home instructing you where to look for the results. For a quick refresher about the Next Generation MCAS scoring and more, please review the Parent Guide from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education below.
