Nuclear: The Advantages By: Kasen cox

Some Brief Information On Nuclear Energy:

Radioactive minerals such as uranium are mined.

Electricity is generated from the energy that is released when the atoms of these minerals are split (by nuclear fission) in nuclear reactors.

A small amount of radioactive material produces a lot of energy.

Raw materials are relatively cheap and can last quite a long time.

It doesn't give off atmospheric pollutants.

Nuclear reactors are expensive to run.

Nuclear waste is highly toxic, and needs to be safely stored for hundreds or thousands of years (storage is extremely expensive).

Leakage of nuclear materials can have a devastating impact on people and the environment. The worst nuclear reactor accident was at Chernobyl, Ukraine in 1986.

Uranium As A Crystal

This crystal is used for nuclear power plants. It's a very rare and useful crystal and has many good and bad uses. A good use would be for nuclear energy to supply homes with energy. A bad use would be for a nuclear bomb. Nuclear energy has so many more advantages than disadvantages. As of today, nuclear energy is considered as one of the most environmentally friendly source of energy as it produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions during the production of electricity as compared to traditional sources like coal power plants. One of the very few cons is radioactive waste which can be re - purposed into military weapons for our nation.

A Nuclear Power Plant

When the heaviest element, uranium was bombarded with neutrons, it was discovered that instead of inducing radioactivity as did other elements, something different happened. This process was named fission. When fission occurred, not only were two lighter elements and a lot of radiation produced, but also more neutrons. It was clear that these neutrons could in turn also cause fission, producing more neutrons and developing a chain reaction which might spread throughout all the uranium present.
