Indian Student Association Reporting by Ivy Lam

With the notable emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the nation, many students seek to be a part of this societal transformation.

At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, two juniors introduced an Indian Student Association to connect members of all backgrounds. With the help of their club sponsor, Chelsea Briggs, the co-founders, Sarah Kathuria and Matthew Veerasammy, were able to collaborate to create change.

ISA stands for Indian Student Association. The club hosts meetings every month where they talk about the culture of India, further conducting activities to teach and learn more about the country itself. Additionally, special meetings and events are hosted whenever there is an important Indian holiday.

Since the 2020-21 school year has become virtual, ISA had to find an effective method to promote their club. With this understanding, their executive board worked to spread the word through social media, school announcements and text messages.

For the future, ISA hopes to host more donation-based projects where they can collaborate with locations in India to donate supplies and make a real-time impact. Additionally, the club plans to host and attend more discussion-based collaborations with other MSD clubs to talk about important local issues.

Below, ISA's sponsor, Chelsea Briggs, and co-presidents, Sarah Kathuria and Matthew Veerasammy, talk about how their club came to be and why it is important to them.
