MEET THE ARTIST

Lewis is an Austin-based artist and an emergency room nurse. Taught in the classical tradition of art and intrigued by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he finds inspiration in Haiku poetry, minimalism, and the narrative that collage can offer. Much of his inspiration comes from looking through junk and used book stores in search of materials (primarily discarded books and magazines from the 1900-1960s). Lewis finds joy in the tattered and broken nature of these items, riveting art pieces in and of themselves and the countless hours of cutting and application, cathartic. It's become his way to reflect, console, and forgive. The mixed media techniques used are traditional, but the stories he creates with them are new and touches on mythology, religion, relationships, and politics.
