Augusto Pinochet was born in Valparaíso, Chile, on Nov. 15, 1915. Pinochet died December 10, 2006, never having stood trial for the crimes for which he was accused.

General Augusto Pinochet is important in the Latin American history because overthrew Chile's president and became a dictator in 1973. He ruled with military force. General Pinochet became a career military officer, after he graduated from military academy. In June 1974 Pinochet assumed sole power as president, relegating the rest of the junta to an advisory role
