August Update from Pastor Kris

Dear Shawnee Alliance Church,

We have much to celebrate together this month! First, God's blessing and your generosity has allowed us to move forward with several projects that will increase the ministry effectiveness of our East Campus. In addition to these projects, we have designated up to $200,000 in additional payments to our building loan. It is sometimes difficult for me to get excited about facilities and numbers, but at the end of the day, we continue to move forward so that more lives can be transformed. We rarely focus on such things; however, with God's continued blessing and guidance, we will continue to create space for ministry.

This month we'll also celebrate the mission trip to Providence RI and be in prayer for Blessing of the Backpacks, Baptisms, 5th Quarter, and the return of Wednesday Activity Night in September. Throughout all of this, I encourage you to participate in what God is doing at Shawnee Alliance Church. Our goal is not to keep you busy; it's to create the space for you and your family to encounter Jesus in new and growing ways!

Blessings!

Kris

Missions Spotlight

See how lives were transformed during the Providence, Rhode Island Mission Trip!

Envision: Providence, RI

A team of 14 adults and teenagers traveled to the Envision missions site in Providence, Rhode Island in early July.

Envision is located in the Elmwood Neighborhood - one of the most ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse areas of South Providence. Envision is shining the light of Jesus into people's lives in their community.

Our objective: work projects during the day and lead a youth basketball camp in the evening.

Work Projects

Our team worked on both the inside and outside of the large Envision site, helping with weeding and cleaning of the parking lot and sidewalks, painting ceilings, pipes, and garden boxes as well as creating multiple worm compost boxes.

Then each afternoon, we prepared a community meal that was open to anyone who wandered onto the site.

Basketball Camp

The evening launched into a basketball camp for the kids. We focused on teaching them basic skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting and layups.

A team member recalls, "One of my favorite memories from the trip involved a young man who will soon be entering high school. It had started to rain, so I invited him to come inside with us. Since he was focused on improving his foul shots, he turned me down. After learning that we were showing a movie about Jesus, he grabbed his ball and headed straight inside!"

Simply Love

Each night was closed with a devotional given by one of the team members. We taught life lessons involving honesty, humility, perseverance, and kindness. The kids were always reminded to "Simply Love" at each closing prayer.

"Rain or shine, we had the opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ. The kids were so open and ready to hear the gospel. What an amazing experience!" - Madi, team member

Team member Jeremy says, "I expected to grow on the trip; however, I very much underestimated the growth I would experience. One of the best parts of this trip was seeing the kids grow day by day. Seeing the smiles on their faces each evening was very rewarding!"

"It was amazing to be able to serve the community and children of Providence, Rhode Island. Reflecting on the memories always brings a smile to my face!"

Bible Reading Plan

Bring transformation to your life by reading your Bible! You will get to know Jesus on a deeper level and learn wisdom for your everyday choices. You can find a free Bible in any of our church lobbies. Please feel free to take one when you're with us at church on Sunday or download the YouVersion app on your phone. Use this simple SOAP format to guide your interaction with God's Word:

  • Scripture. Take your time reading each chapter and allow God to speak to you.
  • Observation. What do you see God doing in the Scripture? What is God saying to you?
  • Application. Ask yourself how you can apply this to your life right now.
  • Prayer. Communicate with God and ask Him to help you apply this to your life.

Try it out this week! Add a chapter from Proverbs every day to the below plan. (This list is also posted every Sunday on social media.)
