Newsletter 10th September 2021

Headteacher Comment

I am delighted to be writing the Newsletter for a brand new Greenfields year. If you scroll down, you'll see pictures of our happy children, settling in and working hard with their friends, from the very youngest children in the Two-Year-Old Room in Nursery right across to the oldest children in Year Six.

Once you get to the end of all the lovely pictures of the classes, you'll be introduced to our new Junior Leadership Team. At Greenfields Primary School and Nursery, we are ambitious for our children, and that includes developing their leadership skills. The Junior Leadership Team are made up of Head Boy, Head Girl (actually a job-share this year, so two Head Girls), House Captains for each of our four houses and Sports Captains for each of our houses too. With the Head of School Council, they are ably supported by a wider junior team and work with the Senior Leadership Team (Mrs Tyrrell-Smith, Mrs Holdcroft, Miss Wood and me) to work on school improvement and development. The JLT stood as candidates and had to make a public statement about what they would contribute to the school. They were voted for by their classes and were presented with thier badges in assembly this morning. Head Boy and the Head Girls were even presented with shiny silver ties to distinguish them.

Every child in the school is assigned to a house, named after a famous Olympian (Ennis, Hoy, Farah and Adlington) and every house point they earn contributes to their class total and their house total. Every week, the class with the most house points wins a basket of yummy treats to say 'thank you', and the prestigious House Cup is awarded to the House Captain of the winning house. You can see this week's results further down the Newsletter.

In the coming weeks, I'll be letting you know more about how our house system works and introducing the teachers who lead each house. In the meantime, there's lots more information in the 'Greenfields Way for Families', which is linked at the bottom of this Newsletter.

Next week, please keep an eye out in your inbox or on the MCAS app for an invitation to a virtual class parent information evening, when you will have a chance to virtually meet your child's teacher and also to book in to visit your child's classroom and meet the staff in a small group. There will also be an opportunity to have a tour of the whole school with Mrs Tyrrell-Smith and me, if COVID restrictions have prevented you from doing so before.

This term, Year Four Remarkable Rhinos and Powerful Panthers) are learning all about the human body. After learning about the structure and function of the skull, they conducted their own investigation to explore the effectiveness of a range of materials (acting as the cranium - skull bones) in protecting a jam marshmallow (acting as the brain!) from being damaged. The class discovered that hard, snugly structures were the most effective materials in preventing the jam marshmallow from being damaged.

These have been updated for the classes in 2021-22, so click on the link for the class you will be in in September.

Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos every Friday next term in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
