WELLNESS NEWS

Happy February, Harris Families!

It has been a great start to 2020! Some of you may have heard about it from your kids already, but I’d like to take a minute to explain something new I’ve been doing with them! Throughout December and January, I have been conducting Minute Meetings with students. This is where I take about 2-3 minutes to meet with every student throughout the school where we sit in the hallway outside of their classroom and do a quick check-in with them. Some of the questions I ask include: How is your school year going? How can we make it better? Do you have a good friend at school? Do you feel connected to an adult at school? Do you feel safe at school? What do you like to do outside of school? Their responses have informed us on ways that we can strengthen students’ connectedness at school as well as to reinforce the importance of relationships with peers and school personnel. I have really enjoyed getting to know more about each and every one of your kids- they’re such amazing young people! Please let me know if there’s another way that you’d like me to connect with your student, my door is always open!

HEALTH OFFICE NEWS

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Kids who have toothaches have a harder time concentrating in class. One thing parents can do to help keep their child’s mouth healthy is to encourage them to brush their teeth every morning, and again before they go to bed. They should brush for 2 minutes, making sure they brush the front and back of their teeth. When teeth aren’t brushed at bedtime, bacteria and food particles work together to start making cavities. Children should see the dentist every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning. You should change toothbrushes every 6 months as well. Another way to protect your child’s teeth is to limit sugary drinks and snacks. Encourage your child to drink water instead of soda and to eat healthy snacks.
