Another Fantastic week for Sport & Exercise and Sport at Edinburgh!
Read on for news from Google Headquarters, another brilliant Climbing Night, upcoming projects and events, BUCS success and much more!
Jim, Cam, Chris and Claire joined our fitness kit supplier Precor to visit the Google offices in London ~ this was to look the newly corporate gym facility, but more, to find more about the new EXOS software solution, which Precor now partner. This is a integrated fitness management platform, from personal being to performance sport. It was an interesting overview, including live chat with EXOS’s people in Chicago, and worthy of more consideration.
However, what struck us more was the jaw-droppingly impressive surrounds enjoyed by Google staff, which are truly inspirational, including free restaurants gym (offering panoramic views of London), meditation room, spin studio, totally insulated music room, massage room, integrated break-out spaces, play-room, teaching kitchen, and more besides ~ this offers their staff a wonderful and inspiring work setting (though they didn’t seem too happy ~ not like us!!).
We move on to the Amer (Precor) HQ Offices tomorrow (Ross B joining us) to discuss a range of issues around new kit supplies, linkage to Amer product lines (Wilson; Suunto; Salmon; etc) and joints projects for the year ahead. Better never stops!!
Highlight of the week goes to the Carnival Climbing Comp at the Wall! We had a huge 73 people attend, a few even got dressed up too! The evening was buzzing and we had positive feedback too! Of course, the pizzas went down a storm as well as the top prize of a white water rafting experience!!
There is a lot of prep work that goes into the success of the these events, so I wanted to thank the whole team for their efforts, but give a specific mention to Liam Knapper. Liam managed the preparation on the lead up to the Comp and the setting on the day impeccably! Well done mate!
Roll on the next and final Comp of the academic year – Monday 6th March… it’ll be PUNbelievable, I’m sure!!!
Project Easter Bush
A small team from Sport & Exercise received exclusive access to the ‘Roslin Innovation Centre and Campus Hub’ yesterday, for a grand tour of what will be Sport & Exercise’ very first ‘Satellite’ Gym. Aside from the mud and the cold it was a very worthwhile preview of what is to come, as we begin to take our service and expertise to the wider University reach.
This building will be pivotal in connecting the campus and bringing more service related functions to its community, not to mention being a launch pad for our promotions and campaigns to get more people to Play. Train. Perform.
Easterbush Gym is due to launch from early September 2017, with much more to follow including Group exercise, workshops and Healthy University related activities. For more information on Easterbush and the Centre building please see
More BUCS success
This week saw another 2 teams crowned BUCS League Champions in their respective competitions.
Men’s Hockey 1’s won their second consecutive Prem North B title with a 3-2 win over Leeds Beckett and finished 4 points ahead of Loughborough.
- Badminton 1’s secured the Tier 1 title for the 4th consecutive year with one game to spare.
- The Hare & Hounds club came back from the BUCS Cross Country with a Women’s team bronze and an individual 6th place for Steph Pennycook.
- The Archery Club headed south for the BUCS Indoor Archery qualifiers and came back with a huge haul of medals and qualification spots filled for the Finals in Bristol.
We still have another 21 teams in contention to lift their respective league titles over the coming weeks.
The draw for the Championship knockouts is about to come out and we will have plenty of action taking place in Edinburgh, welcoming teams from as far south as Bournemouth. Our Men’s squash 1st team will be heading to Oxford next week to open their campaign.
