FLL National Championship
The DoDo Bots, Haque Academy’s Robotics Team, rocked at the 6th #FLL (First Lego League) National Championship of Pakistan by securing 1st position in ROBOT DESIGN - PROGRAMMING category out of 30 participating teams from all over Pakistan The event was organized by STARfALL - Science and Technology Awareness and Recognition for All Foundation, Islamabad, with its regional partner, NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The DoDo Bots was the only team representing Karachi at this national robotics competition where students from around the country participate and demonstrate their knowledge in schools using sophisticated LEGO kits. Haque Academy has offered FLL Robotics course as part of its Extra Curricular Program (ECP) every year since 2013 to prepare teams of students for the Global FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) program and events. We congratulate The DoDo Bots and their coach Ms. Zartaj Waseem on their superb victory.
Taboo Troupe Tournament
Our 2nd Annual Taboo Troupe Tournament 2017 took place between teams from Grades 8-11. The purpose of the tournament was to encourage students to think creatively while improving their vocabulary, speaking skills and self-confidence. The final was won by students of Grade 9A by a margin of 21 points against students of Grade 11A! It was a thrilling and competitive event which certainly had everyone on the edge of their seats. Congratulations to all the participants, especially the champions of Grade 9A and Ms. Nada Kamran for her efforts in successfully conducting the event!
Our Kindergarten Coordinator, Ms. Karima Merchant, has been selected to present her research paper on The Impact of the Writing Eight Exercise at 11 international conferences. Some of the International conferences include: Canada International Conference on Education, Toronto; International Conference for Education at Harvard Medical School, Boston; Teaching and Education Conference, Venice; International Conference on Teaching, Education and Learning, Lisbon; International Academic Multi-discipline Research Conference, London; International Conference and Youth Summit (iEARN), Marrakesh. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the Writing Eight Exercise, an exercise from the Brain Integration Therapy, with Kindergartners who are struggling with writing tasks in school. The study was spread over 15 weeks and had a positive impact on students' approach towards writing tasks, letter formation and fine motor skills. We congratulate Ms. Merchant on her achievement and wish her best of luck!
This term, Chess was introduced as an exciting new module in the Extra-Curricular Programme. In this module, children are taught recognition and movement of pieces, basic rules and strategies and using the point system. The class is held every Tuesday for student of Grades 2-4.
Students of KG2 were visited by Zainab Mahmood Ahmad who is a teacher, journalist, and poet. She is the author of “Tinga’s Car”, a book series being published by Oxford University Press. Zainab was kind enough to take time out of her schedule to conduct a story telling session based on her new book. The children enjoyed the interactive session and responded enthusiastically to Zainab’s inviting story-telling style. The session was followed by an activity where children drew their favorite car in vibrant colors.
Blue Streak Bake Sale
The BLUESTREAK, Haque Academy’s student run newspaper, had its second successful bake sale in February during senior break. All members brought sweet and savory items in line with the February issue's theme of 'love'. The club made an astounding profit of Rs. 43,000 which was donated to various charities: WWF, Shaukat Khanum, LRBT and KHEL. Haque Academy's Debate Club has been very active this past month. They participated in three major tournaments organized by renowned institutes of the city: “Bishop Anthony Lobo Debating Competition’ at St. Patrick’s High School, ZUDC at Ziauddin University and one of the most important Parliamentary Debate national competitions of the year, The Sonnu Rehman Debating Championship organized by Karachi Grammar School. The team won two debates competing against high school and college students at St. Patrick’s High School and Ziauddin University’s ZUDC. Moreover, at the national level competition at Karachi Grammar School, our team won the trophy for the Best New Team to join the debating circuit. Congratulations!
HABS Competition and Bonfire
The Haque Academy Business Society members of Grades 9 to 11 organized the 2nd Entrepreneurship Competition where the idea was to demonstrate entrepreneurship skills by working in teams. The participating teams were given two weeks to prepare for the following modules: 1. Brand Rush; 2. Venture Drive; 3. Rise from the Ashes & Press Mania; 4. Lights Camera Action. The aim of the event was to give our students the exposure and experiential learning opportunity to develop leadership skills. Grade 11 business students were involved in judging, mentoring the teams, coming up with products/brands and cases for the Press Mania module and managing the categories of events. The Best Delegate award went to Rabiya Naseem of Grade 10, and Best Emerging Delegate was Bilal Haider of Grade 9. Team 'Cranium Crushers' took 1st place award in module Rise from the Ashes and Press Mania and was declared the Overall Champion. Team 'Dynamites' won 1st position in Brand Rush module. Team 'Zenith 2.0' won 1st place in Venture Drive while Team 'Seventh Sense' won 1st place in the Lights Camera Action module. The event culminated with a Social Event of a Bonfire followed by a dinner!
Trip to PACC
Students of Grades 4 and 6 watched a play called “Aa Chiri Kha Chiri” organized by Dhanak Arts at PACC. The effort is to engage children away from screens and into live performance entertainment to rekindle the magic of childhood and enhance creative imagination in children. The play did just that and the children thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
Trip to the WWF Mangroves
Grade 7 went to the Mangroves, as part of their unit on Forests and their resources. The students not only learnt about different species of the mangroves, they also planted saplings and went for a walk through the forest. The experience was indeed unforgettable and educational. They also did a beach clean-up activity planned by WWF which the students thoroughly enjoyed.
Trip to Tharparkar
Students of Grades 7 & 8 went to Tharparkar as part of an academic fieldtrip linked to their curriculum. Students reached Nangarparkar via Badin and Mithi and arrived in UmerKot the next day. Their tour included visits to interesting and historically important sites such as Bhalwah Marui, Bhodesar Mosque, Sardharo Hill, Kasbo Village, Birthplace of Akbar, fort/museum and Shiv’s temple.
Trip to Pasha Farms
Grade 9 had the opportunity to visit Pasha Farms as an educational trip related to the topics they are studying in Geography. The students enjoyed observing aquaculture, different methods of growing vegetables and fruits and a 200-year old well used as a conventional method of irrigation. Mr. Tofiq Pasha spoke about the current environmental concerns and initiatives underway to curtail pollution and deforestation. The students were also given a live demonstration of candle making. The trip was educational and fun and was equally enjoyed by students and teachers.
Trip to the Shipyard
Students of grade 10 visited Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Limited. They got an opportunity to explore an active naval warship SAIF and got a tour of the various parts. They were then invited inside a live submarine and an oil ship still under construction. Before leaving they met with the M.D., Rear Admiral Syed Hassan Nasir, and asked him questions over some refreshments. It was surely a once and a lifetime opportunity!
Students and parents of Aeromodelling SPARC Module were invited to a special half-day trip to the Korangi Flying Field. Everyone enjoyed the exciting RC aerial display followed by a brief question and answer session. The session concluded with a delicious breakfast. Thank you to Mr. Amin Desai and his team for arranging this one-of-a-kind opportunity for the students.
Our students Adil Ishaq Khan of grade 8 and Zaina Atif of grade 3 toured FC Barcelona as part of the Karachi United club select group. The Karachi United has become the first club from Pakistan to tour the world renowned FC Barcelona. The players received exclusive training sessions from Barcelona coaches and played friendly matches against local club youth teams. The tour also gave the youngsters a chance to visit the FC Barcelona museum, the famed FC Barcelona Youth Academy, La Masia and most importantly, a chance to see a live match featuring FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou Stadium! http://dailytimes.com.pk/sindh/13-Feb-17/karachi-united-to-tour-fc-barcelona
