I think that war is something that people think can solve problems but it really starts problems. War is a thing that people hate but still follow through with.
People in the World War II countries probably felt cold because they would probably be scared to death in their basement. If they saw a plane they wouldn't know if it was a plane shipping supplies or a war plane attacking their country. If they smelled smoke they wouldn't know if it was a burning building or a fireplace nearby. If they heard someone screaming anything war-related they probably wouldn't have an idea who it was and if they could tell if it was someone in the war they probably couldn't tell if it was a soldier on their side or the Nazi side.
I think my neighbors are really rude about the smallest things. And not only are they rude they complain about everything and don't have an idea how to handle their anger.
If there was war in my neighborhood I would get some food and some living supplies put it in a bag, grab a stick, run outside and scream every man for themselves. Or I would grab those things and hide in my basement.
Number the stars
I predict that this book will take place in Germany and Denmark. I think the main antagonist is going to be Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. I think the conflict will be that Hitler and the Nazis are going to make concentration camps and kill thousands of Jews.
Prediction: We just read about Mama going to get the Rosens and Henrik to the ship and she tripped on a root and hurt her ankle. When Annemarie was helping Mama to the house, she noticed the packet that Peter gave Mr. Rosen and she needed to give it to Mr. Rosen and Mama couldn’t deliver it to Mr. Rosen. Therefore I predict that Annemarie will bring it to Mr. Rosen but she gets stopped by a soldier who asks what’s in it and looks in it and PLOT TWIST it’s Mr. Rosen’s thumb.
Mama says, "Be one of many." I think this means that you shouldn't stand out in the crowd. That you're supposed to make yourself unknown so you don't make people suspicious. You shouldn't let people have any reason to remember you. You shouldn't be remembered by anyone.
"' Hold still. This will hurt.' She grabbed the little gold chain with all her strength broke it. As the door opened and light flooded in the bedroom, she crumpled it not her hand and closed her fingers tightly.
(1) Annemarie felt like she needed to help the Jews but she said to herself she was glad to be a normal person not called to help other people.
(2) Her feelings in chapter 3 to me were the same to the action in chapter 5 because in chapter 3 she feels like she should help the Jews and in chapter 5 she actually did something to help a Jew.
(3) The Star of David being imprinted in Annemarie's hand is symbolic of her and Ellen's relationship by saying that Annemarie will go to any measure even being imprinted with something that could get her in trouble to save her friend.
We just read about Henrik talking about putting someone that was never alive in a casket and about 'fishing weather'. Also about what Kirsti named a cat and how Mama said that cats like milk not water and that if the cat wants milk it will go to it's mother.
Therefore I think that Henrik has a plan.
"'Well,' Annemarie said slowly, "now I think that all of Denmark must be bodyguard for the Jews, as well.'" (page 25).
I think it would look like people defending the Nazis with weapons for Denmark to be a bodyguard for the Jews. Also the Danes probably were hiding Jews and helping them escape.
Lizzie said they would be fighting every time a German was taking something from a Jew, or if someone was being hurt the bodyguard would do it back to the German. Another example would be if they closed a shop they would give them the shop back to the owner.
Man vs man
A moment in Number the Stars when it was a man vs man conflict, Mama was slapped by some soldiers. She had asked if they wanted to see what was in a casket and he felt disrespected to be asked such a question and he slapped Mama.
Mama is one of the characters involved in this conflict and she learned to not ask a soldier if they want to see what's in a casket.
I know this is a man vs man conflict because the soldier physically harmed Mama.
Man vs self
A moment in Number the Stars when it showed a Man vs Self conflict was when Ellen was in Annemarie's house and they were in bed because of soldiers. Annemarie was deciding what to do and she decided to yank off Ellen's necklace so the German soldiers wouldn't see the Star of David and notice that she is Jewish.
Annemarie who was involved in this conflict was to always do the right thing because if you don't it can lead horrible consequences.
I know this is a Man vs Self conflict because Annemarie had to think about what decision to make.
Man vs nature
A moment in Number the Stars when it was Man vs Nature, Annemarie was walking through the woods to get Uncle Henrik the handkerchief . She was taking because Mama couldn't and she was frightened because the path would turn every so often. That scared her because she never knew when a group of soldiers would come put of no where and stop her which is what happened eventually.
Annemarie was involved in this conflict and she learned to be more cautious and aware of her surroundings.
I know this is a Man vs Nature conflict because Annemarie was scared of all the turns because she was unsure if a soldier or group of soldiers would see her and stop her and grab the food hiding the pack the handkerchief was in and take it with them.
Man vs society
A moment in Number the Stars when it was a Man vs Society conflict was when Peter continued to bring Annemarie's parents the secret newspaper even though it was against society. He was part of the Resistance and he fought for the Jews to not be put in the Concentration Camps and die a horrible death.
Peter who was involved in this conflict had learned that what he did was the right thing to do and that when he died he didn't deserve it but he died proud of what he had done for the Jews.
I know this is a Man vs Society conflict because in the end of the book Peter was killed by society for all the thing he did to help the Jews.
The theme always have someone you can count on to be your friend means that you always have your friends back and that you go through something if they are.
This book shows this theme because Annemarie in the beginning of the book was always helping Ellen to get to Sweden away from the German soldiers. Also in the end it shows this because even though Annemarie couldn't see Ellen, she wore Ellen's Star of David necklace so she could remember her.
LANKY & STOCKY
"She was a stocky ten-year-old, unlike lanky Annemarie." (page 1)
Based on this sentence, these words are comparing the girls. It is describing their physical features, which are opposite because it uses the word "unlike".
The definition of lanky is tall and skinny. Stocky means big and bulky.
Suffix: -y, relating to or filled with; Other words: messy, cheesy, lucky
But Annemarie heard Mama and Papa talk, sometimes at night, about the new they received that way: news of sabotage against the Nazis, bombs hidden and exploded in the factories that produced war materials, and industrial railroad lines damaged so that the goods couldn't be transported.
Solemn: “Thinking if Lise, her solemn, lovely sister, always made her sad.” Based on the sentence the meaning seems like something happy, but the actual definition is serious.
Ration/Rationed: “It was so long a time since they had dared to use the strictly rationed electricity after dark that the light in the room seemed startling to Annemarie, watching through the slightly opened bedroom door.” Based on the sentence the meaning seems like something not used a lot and the actual definition is scarce or not much use of.
Imperious: “Ellen stood on tiptoe again, and made an imperious gesture with her arm”. Based on the sentence the meaning seems like having power, but the actual definition is dominant.
