Point Comfort contraband camps

Virginia's first Africans brought to Point Comfort in 1619.

Major General Benjamin Butler made the decision to classify freedom seekers as "Contrabands of War."

This decision started a chain of events that would end slavery in America.

From a slave to a Freedman

General Butler allowed the people of the Contraband Camps to build homes for their families.

Homes were built out of left over and damaged wood.

The Freedmen built a school for the community.

The Butler School built on Fort Monroe in 1865.

November 1, 2011, Fort Monroe was officially declassified as a Military Base and declared a National Monument.

President Obama declares Fort Monroe a National Monument.
