Abortion By Cannon Bunkall

Every year there are over 900,000 abortions that happen in the United States. That doesn't even include the rest of the world. In 2013, approximately 13% of all pregnancies in the United States were abortions (Abort73). Imagine if all those innocent lives hadn't been ended. Those fetuses did not deserve to die. They deserved the right to live. Many people believe it is a woman’s right to abort her baby, however, this is false because abortion is murder, it defies God, and because fetuses have rights.

Today, many people think that because the baby is being carried in the womb of a mother, it is her choice to end the life of that fetus. However, abortion is murder. The fetus is not just some inanimate object growing in a mother’s body, it has a functioning body that can feel pain. According to Ronald Bailey, a libertarian science writer, by 20 weeks of fertility, the “...most primitive response to pain, the spinal reflex, is fully developed”(Bailey). It is inhumane to kill this fetus. It is a living baby that will soon be born and later contribute to society. No one should have the choice to end this baby’s life. Even courts are beginning to recognize this. For example, in Ohio, there was a man who was found guilty of murder after beating his pregnant girlfriend and leaving the seven month old fetus dead(Ohio Man found Guilty). Abortion is no different from this example of the man ending the life of his girlfriend’s baby, as both are inhumanely murdering a fetus. The killing of the fetus in any way is murder.

Abortion defies the word of God. The seventh of the Ten Commandments given to the prophet Moses states “thou shalt not kill.” The Bible strictly prohibits the act of killing another person. Just because a fetus is not fully developed yet does not mean it is okay to kill, and in the eyes of God, a fetus is a person. In the the book of Jeremiah, God speaks to Jeremiah and tells him “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations”(Jeremiah 1:5). In this verse, God tells Jeremiah that he is not just some random person that became a prophet, but that he was chosen before birth. God knows and loves all of his children individually. No child is more or less important in the eyes of the Lord, born or unborn. In the book of Psalms, it states “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him”(Psalms 127:3). This verse tells the world that if people are blessed with having children, they should value this blessing. Babies and unborn fetuses are a gift, and like any gift someone is given, they shouldn't destroy it.

Though a fetus is not born yet, it is still a living person with the right to live. Life begins at conception. Fetuses “...have an active brain, a heart that beats, arms, legs, and a body that can move and feel”(Chua 2). Just because it isn't born yet, doesn't mean a mother’s rights outweigh a fetus’s rights. Many people when trying to defend their stance on abortion say “It is the woman’s body, and she can do what she wants with it”, but a fetus is not just a natural part of a pregnant woman’s body. It is a separate human life, which has separate rights. Fetuses deserve a chance at life just like everyone else. It is wrong to take away this right, which should be given to everyone, and end the life of an innocent human being.

Call to Action

Abortion should made illegal because it is murder, it defies the word of God, and because fetuses have rights. Do your part in helping the immoral act of abortion end. Ways you can help include sharing your views with others, contacting your congressman and state representatives, and by spreading this message through social media.
