School Safety

  • One of our primary missions at Rocky River Elementary School and Cabarrus County Schools is to ensure the safety of our students and staff so everyone can engage in learning. Here at Rocky River all staff participate in safety training to ensure the appropriate actions to take in the event of an emergency. Students participate in drills regularly throughout the school year. After each drill, our teachers debrief with our students to ensure the understand the purpose of the drills and answer any questions.
  • As a part of our safety measures, the only families that are allowed to walk students to class are pre-k parents because they are required by policy. Knowing who is in our building keeps our students and staff safe at all times and protects valuable morning instructional time.
  • We are asking all families to share with their students the importance of participating in our school safety drills, sharing with their teachers or their families if they see something unsafe and be respectful, responsible and safe Roadrunners.

Arrival, Dismissal and Check-out Procedures

  • We are excited to greet each Roadrunner daily. To ensure their safety when arriving please check out the procedures below.
  • Car riders: Students should not be dropped off before 7:45 am or let out of their vehicles until a Rocky River staff member is outside to greet them. This ensures student safety as they enter the school for a wonderful day of learning. Students should only be dropped off in the designated car rider circle. where staff are opening doors. In the afternoon K-1 students should be picked up in the car rider circle and 2-5 students should be picked up in the staff parking lot. All car riders should have a tag to designate student vehicles. If you do not have a car rider tag when picking up a student, you will be asked to go to main office to verify you have permission to pick-up the student.
  • Bus riders: Bus riders need to be at their bus stop 10 minutes before their designated pick up time. It is important students are safe while at the bus stop by standing in an orderly fashion an not running around or playing. Students should board the bus in an orderly fashion once the bus driver has come to a complete stop and turned on their flashing lights. While on the bus students should remain seated in the assigned seats at all times. Elementary students are not allowed to have their electronic devices out on the bus at any time. Lastly, to maintain student safety and bus cleanliness, students are not allowed to eat or drink on the bus.
  • Check-in/Check-out: If a student arrives to school after 8:15 am a parent or guardian must come into school and sign the student in for the day. If a parent or guardian needs to check a student out of school early, they must have a valid identification or driver's license and it must be before 2:30 pm.
  • Changes in Transportation: All changes in student afternoon transportation must be in writing either in a note to the homeroom teacher or via email. Student transportation changes are not allowed over the telephone or via text message.

RRES Family Resource Center

We are excited to continue to build relationships with our families and communities. Last year we created a family resource center where families can come in and have access to a computer to complete school-based applications/forms and access to learning materials to enhance learning experiences at home. We would like to invite our families to come in and use our resource center as needed to support the educational success of their students. In order to access our family resource center, you must sign-in at the front office.

Question of the Week

As an admin team, we want to know every one of our students, and share their lives with them. In an effort to connect with our students, we will share a question of the week with the whole Rocky River family. It will be used as a topic of conversation when we sit with students in the cafeteria or have time to chat at any appropriate time in the day. This question will be shared in the Sunday night ConnectEd, Monday on the morning broadcast, and we will post it in the cafeteria. We hope that sharing the question of the week ahead of time will encourage more students to share their thoughts and interests with us. We look forward to hearing what our Roadrunners have to say!!

Engaging our Students

Important Information

  • Volunteering: We always encourage family and community involvement. All volunteers must have a completed back ground check. Procedures for completing a background check are located on the Rocky River Webpage.
  • Recess: As summer has changed to fall and winter it is imperative our students have weather appropriate clothing for their 30 minutes of outdoor recess. If your student needs support with weather appropriate clothing please contact our School Counselors, Mrs. Wright (K-2) and Mrs. Herring (3rd-5th).
  • Lost and Found: Each day we collect numerous coats, hats and student items in our lost and found. Please encourage your student to check our lost and found daily.
  • Eating Lunch with your Student: We always encourage family involvement here at Rocky River. A great time to spend with your student is during their lunch period. Parents/guardians and designated family members by parents/guardians may eat lunch with their student at the family tables in the cafeteria. We ask that if you bring in outside food, please bring it in a shopping bag or brown paper bag. Also, note that on days when students each lunch in their classrooms, parents will be unable to eat lunch with their students. If you have questions regarding your student's lunch time, please contact their homeroom teacher.
