Chapter 3 Compassion: This is the theme and the title of this chapter because compassion is a prominent throughout the entire book. Father G shows compassion when he takes in all the homies no matter their pasts. In this chapter Father G explains to us what compassion is. I can relate to this because when someone is sad or not having their best day I can remember to be compassionate like Father G. My favorite story in this chapter is when Father G takes Chepe and Riche out to a restaurant. Both of them have never been out to a formal restaurant. Their waitress there was very loving and compassionate. She respected and cared for the boys even if they were "different." "She was Jesus in an apron." This story reminds me no matter the person you should always be compassionate and accepting toward others.
Chapter 5 Slow Work: This is the theme and title of this chapter because throughout this chapter Father G talks about how we have to be patient with God. His miracles and work are not immediate. We have to remember to not rush our prayers and his plan for us. This relates to my life because sometimes I am not very patient with God and I want an immediate answer. My favorite story in this chapter is Pedro's Dream. Pedro is a homie and is close with Father G. Pedro tells Father G about this dream he had. The dream took place in a dark room with no windows or doors. Father G was in the dream with Pedro. Father G had flashlight but he was unable to turn it on. The only person who could turn it on was Pedro. This dream helps him realize that he doesn't want to be in the dark anymore. This is my favorite story because it shows us how God can work in mysterious ways and how their is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Chapter 7 Gladness: This is the theme and title for this reading because throughout this chapter Father G talks about how the little things can brighten someone's day. I can relate to this because when someone is sad I can just give them the simplest smile and that can make their day to go better. Gladness is like a chain reaction. One smile can create other smiles. My favorite story is the story about Father Boyle's father. Father G tells about the time his father was diagnosed with leukemia. When he was in the hospital he was very lonely and in a lot of pain, so he asked his wife to bring him her pillow. When she brought the pillow he was overcome with happiness because the pillow reminded him of her. This is my favorite story because it reminds me that little bits of happiness can change someone's life.
