J.R. Briggs Newsletter August 28, 2019

No School Friday, August 30 & Monday, September 2

Welcome back to your school year routines! We have been anxiously waiting the start of the year, and things have gotten off on the right step. We have a few reminders about student pick-ups that we want to make sure are echoed throughout the school community.

  • Please send a note to jrboffice@awrsd.org if there is a change in your regular end of the day routine or if you have not established a regular routine.
  • Parent pick-up starts at 2:50 PM in the rear of the building.
  • Parent drop-off is between 8:20 and 8:30 AM. If you arrive out back after 8:30 and there are no staff members there, please drive around to the front doors. Your child will then need to check in at the main office as they enter.
  • Please do not pass any cars unless directed to do so by a staff member.

Thank you all for your understanding.

Music/Chorus/Band News

JRB Music news:

The JRB Chorus will begin singing on Friday, September 13th BEFORE school from 7:30-8:20am in the music room. The signup flyer is being sent home today with all 3rd, 4th & 5th graders, and is also attached here:

A representative from David French Music will give a demonstration of the band instruments for grades 3-5 during school on Thursday, September 5th. A form will go home with all 3rd, 4th & 5th graders for students to rent an instrument through David French Music if needed, as well as information on lessons.

For new band students, Beginner Band rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays AFTER school, from 3-4pm, on the stage. We are hoping to begin the week of September 16th. It is required that band students take either private or small group lessons on their instrument, which cost $20 for each 30-minute lesson per week. We offer mostly after school lessons here at JRB, but some instructors may offer before school lessons as well. If you would like a specific day and time for your child’s lesson, or have questions, please email Mrs. Lordan at mlordan@awrsd.org. You can also sign up for lessons on the instrument form that will be sent home following the instrument demonstration.

For returning band students, Advanced Band rehearsals will be held Wednesdays AFTER school from 3-4pm, on the stage, and Jazz Band immediately after from 4-5pm. We will begin the week of September 16th.

Music lessons for grades K-5: JRB also offers lessons for students in grades K-5 for voice, piano, guitar, ukulele and violin. If your child is interested in lessons for any of these instruments, please email Mrs. Lordan at mlordan@awrsd.org, and she will put you in touch with an instructor who has openings for that instrument.

Parent/Guardian Help Needed

Volunteer Carpenter Needed

Ms. Davis and Ms. Bennett are looking for a volunteer to work with fifth-grade students on several engineering projects in September. Students will be building a handicap-accessible bridge across the drainage ditch that separates the parking lot from the science garden and several "learning stations" for the nature trail. If you have time during the school day, basic carpentry skills, and access to a power saw, we need you! Please email Ms. Davis at tdavis@awrsd.org if you are interested or would like more information.

WANTED: A Few Umbrellas!

Do you have an extra umbrella taking up space in your closet or car? This year we have changed our bus dismissal process to skip the part where kids line up in the hall before getting on buses. Students are going directly from classrooms to buses. We tried it yesterday and it went quite well! To help with this we have some 5th grade bus leaders who are holding bus signs to help other students locate their bus (don't worry lots of staff helping too!). Our bus leaders will be standing on the sidewalk next to their buses come rain or shine, so we would love to have a basket of umbrellas available to them on rainy days. If you have an umbrella to donate, send it on in to the front office and thank you ahead of time!
