Midterm Portfolio By:Sabrina Hanville

Describe: The pictures used were taken during the same day and in generally the same location. Different poses and lighting were also used. The colors in this piece are muted and I think it's because of the time of day that these were shot during.

Analyze: This picture uses a couple different composition points. One of these points would be framing. The lines created by the branches of the trees are creating a frame above the subject. Another point is layering. The subject of the photo has many layers to it giving it depth. A third point is the rule of thirds. The subject is to the right third of the picture and it draws your eyes to a different side of the picture that you probably wouldn't look at if the subject was in the middle.

Interpret: The purpose of this piece was to try and make a joiner that resembled one of David Hockney's. It was to try and show a change in personality and environment within the subject.

Evaluate: I feel that this piece was successful in completing the task for the assignment. It shows a sense of movement and a change in the person. These pictures were taken well. It may have been a little more helpful if the pictures were taken closer to the subject, but they still worked for this assignment.

Describe: This photo is showing one of my fellow classmates sitting on the bleachers out on the football field. It was a bright and somewhat windy day, as you can see by the blue sky and clouds in the background. She was trying to keep a straight face because she wanted to achieve a more serious look.

Analyze: The two art elements that work well in this piece are line and space. Line works well in this because of the lines created by the bleachers and the building in the background. Space is used well because everything is in this photo for a reason. The two principles of design that are shown in this piece are balance and emphasis. Balance is shown since she is placed in the middle of the photograph and there is nothing on either side of her. Emphasis is shown because she is the focus of the picture and she has the most color on her.

Interpret: The purpose of this piece was for a photography scavenger hunt that we had to do during class. We had to try and find examples of every word on the powerpoint and this photo was chosen to represent balance.

Evaluate: I think this photo was successful in showing balance. I think this because balance means placing objects within a picture so everything in that picture is of equal visual weight. In this picture, that is achieved because she is centered in this photograph which creates the type of visual balance that was set out to be accomplished.

Describe: This image was taken during a very bright day. The colors are just as bright and they draw you in. When you first look at the piece, you see the In-N-Out sign because it is the only thing in the cloudless blue sky. You can also see some basic shapes like triangles and squares, but you can also see some unusual shapes like the one of the sign and the ones the branches make. These shapes have sharp edges that add to the picture.

Analyze: Color is used a considerable amount in this picture. The bright colors of everything add to the somewhat happy feeling of this piece. One compositional point that's used is balance. Balance is used because the sign goes straight up the middle and there are buildings that line the bottom of the photo. This makes the photo visually balanced. Texture also plays a part in this picture. The texture of the roof and of the palm trees can be clearly seen in this picture and it helps to add to the 3D effect. Without the texture, I don't think the 3D would be as effective as it is with it.

Interpret: When looking at this piece, it evokes a happy emotion from you because of the bright colors. It might also make someone want food from that restaurant. The artist created this piece just to show a sense of balance and to make people happy when they see it. After seeing this picture, people will be happy because of the bright colors and amazing weather that can be seen in the picture.

Evaluate: I feel that this picture is well taken and helps to make people happy. It may not convey a specific message but I feel that it still has a purpose. I feel that this work could be of value to others because if they're feeling down, then they could look at it to try and cheer themselves up and even show it to others to make them happy too.

Describe: The first thing I noticed when I looked at this photograph was that the subject is laying on what seems to be a wooden stage. This picture seems to have been taken during the day. I can tell because parts of him are lighter and I'm guessing that's where the sunlight is. The artist chose to put the photo in black and white. This picture evokes a sense of curiosity because we want to know why he was laying there and what book he seems to be holding. It's a very interesting photograph.

Analyze: One of the composition points used in this piece is the rule of thirds. This picture is very off-center and that's what makes the photo as interesting as it is. A second composition point used is layering. The first layer starts with where the subject is and goes across. The next layer is the top of the hill. The last layer is the fence at the top of the hill with the sky. The artist also used light in her piece. The subject and the platform are the lightest part of the picture. The grass on the hill is darker which puts more emphasis on the subject.

Interpret: At first glance, this artwork gives off a somewhat gloomy tone. It also evokes a sense of wonder. It makes you ask questions like why is he laying there, what book does he have in his hand, and how did he end up where he is. I think the artist chose to take the picture like this to make viewers ask themselves questions like the ones I stated above.

Evaluate: Overall, this picture was a success. It's a very interesting picture that I don't think anyone else would've had the idea to take. This work has value because it shows that some people can be happy in even the simplest situations and that we should all be free to do what makes us happy. I think people could benefit from seeing this photograph because they could think of the same thing I said in the previous sentence or they may choose to believe a different reason for why she chose to take this photo and those are the kinds of responses that can come from a good photo.

Describe: When I first looked at this photo, my eyes were immediately drawn to the husky's eyes. The bright blue eyes with the black and white fur just popped and made my eyes go right to it. The colors in this photo are mainly bright and "happy" colors. They help to make the details in the photo pop. The lines in these piece are the edge of the banner, building, and the borders around the window. This picture seems to have been taken in the middle of the day. I think this because the sky is a bright blue and there are no shadows to be seen.

Analyze: The different colors of the banner are more vibrant since they are on a neutral colored wall. This helps to draw your eye in and make you focus on the words. A composition point that is used is leading lines. The lines of the windows help to take your eyes around the picture until you get to the banner and do the same thing again. Another composition point is framing. Between the edge of the building and the windows, they seem to create a frame around the banner which puts more emphasis on it.

Interpret: I think the artist chose to take the picture like this because of the composition points I talked about above. She probably created this work just to take a nice photograph of this banner. This photo doesn't really seem to evoke any kind of emotion from me.

Evaluate: Overall this picture was well taken. I also think that this picture wouldn't have that big of an effect on others if it were shown to them. This piece doesn't really focus on an important issue or subject, it's just a picture of a banner. This picture is still a good piece, it just doesn't have any emotional appeal to me.
