HBHS Hybrid Health Mrs. Renee pelkey

"The secret to getting ahead is getting started." Mark Twain

Who is your teacher? My name is Mrs. Pelkey. I've been an HB local my entire life and as such am also a HBHS Alumni Class of 1999 :) I earned an Associates of Arts degree from Golden West College. A Bachelors of Arts in Family and Consumer Sciences Education as well as Health Education from California State University, Long Beach. And I also have a Masters Degree in Educational Technology. I'm starting my 12th year of teaching and am very excited to share this experience with you.
What is the difference between a "Regular Health Class" and a "Hybrid Health Class?" The main difference is the amount of in-class time you will have vs. in front of the computer time you will need to schedule into your week.
So when will the class meet? The class will meet Period Zero on your schedule. The class will meet as a whole on Mondays ONLY. I will be taking attendance on Mondays and class participation points will be assigned for attending class on this day of the week. Since we only meet in person one day a week the lesson on this day will be of importance. The rest of the weeks lessons will use Mondays learning as a starting point for the online piece of the course. You should expect to spend approximately 4-5 hours a week online. Also, there will be a "Weekly Check In" that will have points assigned to it. I will have "Office Hours" throughout the week at numerous times throughout the day. You will need to pick one day/time a week to come "check in" with me. I will be available to talk about assignments, questions on topics, issues with Canvas, the previous guest speaker, and anything else you may need help with.
How will I be graded in this course? Your grade will be broken up into four categories; Participation/Attendance, Projects and Unit Exams, weekly Online Discussion Boards, and weekly Assignments. Its very important that you check Canvas often to keep up on the assignments and not allow yourself to get overwhelmed. If you have any questions or concerns please message me through Canvas Inbox or come see me in person anytime!
For a more detailed description of the class syllabus, please click on the link below to a "paper copy."
What topics will be discussed within the course?
