My nonfiction book report By Julia Niden

Who is the author and what is the title?

Wasted is written by Marya Hornbacher and published in the year 1998.

Marya Hornbacher

What is it about?

This is a memoir of her life and her struggles against bulimia and anorexia.

What time period did it occur?

The content of Wasted starts in the year of 1974, with her birth, and extends to present day, talking about after all she has been through.

Where was it set?

This book was set in Edina, Minnesota when it was referring to her childhood, and California when they were referring to her early and late teen years.

Why is Marya Hornbacher important to this book?

Without Marya, this book would not have existed. Since it is a memoir it is talking about her life, and her experiences. She is the foundation of this and it continues to talk about her struggles, and how she interpreted it and why she did what she did, so extreme she was less than 59 pounds at the age of 17.

Whats happening in this book?

Marya, from the young age of just five she came home after her ballet class, curled up in a ball and baggy sweaters crying about how fat she was. It also talks about her struggling with bulimia, and educates you on the difference of anorexia and bulimia, it continues to talk about struggling with binge eating and then proceeding to purge. Finally it talks about recovery and what makes it all worth wanting to get help to get on the path of recovery.

Why is this important

Going through middle school and highschool there is always pressure to be skinny and lose weight, this book tells you the other side of it, the long lasting effects it will have on your body, and how it will consume your every thoughts and get out of control. In my opinion society tends to stay away from talking about mental illness or anxiety or eating disorders, and this book does not do that. It tells you what it is, and is a good book to learn from.

Seven things I learned

  1. In a study of anorectic patients, most had suffered from childhood anxiety disorders five years prior
  2. Self induced vomiting causes bumps of the back of the hand or knuckles
  3. Healthy range of body fat for women in 18-25
  4. People who eat a lot of low fat diets with a normal amount of calories had a higher rate of depression
  5. An eating disorder is an addiction
  6. Bulimics first eat a bright color food so when they purge, they know when all the food is out of there system
  7. Anorexia can cause your hair to become brittle and fall out

On a scale of 1 to 5, what do i rate it

On a scale of one to five, I would give this book a 3.5, only because it tended to be slow and took awhile for it to become intresting. If you are not intrested about mental health and eating disorders, this isn't the book for you. I would only recommend this book to a small selective few.
