The Hunger Games By : Lauren Maki

"The Hunger Games" starts off with our main character, Katniss Everdeen, in District 12, one of the 13 districts of Panem. Katniss is a 16-year-old, scrawny, brunette, with green eyes. She lives with her mother and sister, Primrose Everdeen. She has had to take care of both of them from a fairly young age since their father had died in a mining accident. She goes out and hunts with one of her good friends, Gale, to keep her family alive.

The Reaping

Every year "The Reaping" is held to decide who will be participating in the games. A boy and a girl from each district that is between the ages of 12 and 18 will be chosen to compete in "The Hunger Games." This year, the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss' little sister Prim was chosen at the young age of 12. Katniss couldn't stand that Prim was chosen so she decided to volunteer, becoming the first person from District 12 to ever volunteer. The other candidate that was chosen was Peeta Mellark.

The Bakery in District Twelve

When Katniss and Peeta are at the train station, the mayor's daughter and also Katniss' best female friend, Madge Undersee gives Katniss a Mockingjay pin. Madge gave Katniss the pin in remembrance of her aunt, Maysilee, who had died in a previous game. She is hoping that the pin gives Katniss more luck than Maysilee.

Peeta and Katniss break the norms by holding hands as they walk out together, as they introduce themselves as candidates in the games, proceeding to shock everyone.
Training Camp

As soon as they get their, they pretty much start their training for the games. During the last day of training, they have an evaluation. During this, Katniss shoots an apple on one of the evaluator's heads.

During an interview the night before the games begin, Peeta confesses his loves to Katniss.
The beginning of the games starts off with everyone on some pads surrounding the very center of the cornucopia. If they step off of these pads, they will die. In the beginning, some people rush into the center trying to get supplies, and others run from it to scope out a good hiding place.
The Forest

During the games, Peeta ditches Katniss to get in with "The Careers." "The Careers" are generally people from wealthy families that view getting chosen to be in the games as an honor. Though Peeta is gone, Katniss is doing perfectly fine without him. Since the Capital thinks that Katniss is doing too well, to throw her off they pelt her with fireballs, causing her leg to get burned, and starting a forest fire. To try and sooth the burn, she goes into a lake, but "The Careers" find her, chasing her up a tree. While she is up there, she meets a young girl named Rue who saves her from "The Careers" by telling her to throw the the "Tracker Jackers" (poisonous, robotic, bees) onto them. Though this saved her from "The Careers" she still managed to get stung by a couple of "Tracker Jackers," making her hallucinate.

Rue ends up getting chased by "The Careers." Rue is calling out to Katniss, so Katniss runs to save her. Rue got caught in a trap, and only has the chance to call out Katniss's name one more time before she gets speared. After she dies, Katniss gives her a burial, covering her in daisies. Katniss's whole attitude toward that game changes. Now, instead of just wanting to try and last as long as possible, she wants to win. Rue reminded Katniss of Prim, and she couldn't stand to lose her. She had to win to come back for Prim.

After Rue's burial, Clove tries to kill Katniss, by pinning her down and trying to end her simple life with a knife.

Everyone but Katniss and Peeta die, but the capitol still won't both of them be victors.

Poison Berries

Katniss and Peeta threaten to kill themselves with poison berries so that there is either two victors or no victors. In the end, the Capitol agrees to let them both win "The Hunger Games."
