I'm so happy to present to you my proposal for your getaway to Spain and Italy. I've taken into account your wishes for this escape:

  • Opportunity to experience local cultures and cuisines
  • Hotels that are walkable for exploration and include breakfast in the stay
  • Visit to a Spanish beach town and Cinque Terre in Italy

You'll depart Dulles the evening of September 11th and fly nonstop to Barcelona. You'll arrive early the next morning and be met by a driver for private transfer to your hotel.

Grand Hotel Central

The Grand Hotel Central's elegant building is ideally situation in the center of the city next to Barcelona's cathedral, boasting spectacular views of the entire Gothic district and the ancient city walls. Providing guests the opportunity to stroll through the historic city and admire the Gothic architectural surroundings, visit museums, the sea front or enjoy shopping at the nearby Plaza Cataluña. Guests will enjoy the seasonal rooftop infinity pool and dining options at the hotel which include the Ávalon Restaurant where the awarded Chef Ramon Freixa presents affordable cuisine with its unique interpretation of Mediterranean food to share with friends, and the stylish City Bar offers all day dining including salads, sandwiches and a wide cocktail menu surrounded by good music in a relaxing atmosphere.

You'll spend the first two days of your honeymoon relaxing and strolling the beach. On the 14th, you'll enjoy priority access to the Sagrada Familia, where you'll have a 1.5 hour tour of the historic modernist masterpiece.

On September 15th, you'll transfer to the airport where you'll fly nonstop to Florence.

Hotel Albani

Hotel Albani Firenze is conveniently located near Fortezza da Basso, Palazzo dei Congressi, Centro Affari, Santa Maria Novella Church, San Lorenzo's Market and San Lorenzo Church. This business hotel offers a fitness room with several exercise machines, free weights, a massage room, and a 42-inch plasma-screen TV. A sauna also is available. Guests can start the morning with breakfast in the lower ground floor restaurant, providing two hot and cold buffet areas. Before exploring the local sights, guests can quiz the concierge for information at the 24-hour front desk or take advantage of wireless Internet to help plan their day. Wi-Fi connection extends to the patio area, where visitors can relax outside with a drink on cushioned sofas and chairs surrounded by exotic plants.

You'll explore Florence on your own for a couple of days. Be sure to tour the Uffizi, and visit the Duomo and Accademia. On the 17th, you'll take a small-group Cinque Terre day trip with wine tastings and a three-course seafood lunch.

On September 18th, you'll transfer to Santa Maria Novella station where you'll board a train for Rome.

Hotel Dei Mellini

Located on the bank of the Tiber, this hotel is one mile from the Spanish Steps and one-half mile from Vatican City. The six-story Hotel Dei Mellini, Rome, offers 80 air-conditioned guestrooms, decorated in soft neutral shades of taupe and brown with heavy striped drapes, cream upholstery, coordinating patterned bedspreads, and cherry wood furniture. Adjacent to the reception area, the Mellini Bar serves a wide range of drinks and an all-day menu of light hot and cold dishes, from pastas to salads to desserts. In a cool interior patio with large potted palms, guests can browse the complimentary newspapers and sip morning coffee. In summer, guests can enjoy drinks and snacks on the sunny roof terrace; an adjoining solarium has chaise lounges. The many boutiques and cafés in the surrounding streets include a tempting choice of pasticcerie and cioccolateria (cake and chocolate shops).

You'll love your suite overlooking the hotel's inner courtyard. Quiet and welcoming with orange, beige and green interiors, it has a large double bedroom, a desk and plenty of space for your personal effects, ample drawers, and a closet in the adjacent hallway. The living room has a sofa bed with a French mattress, a big table on which you can enjoy room service breakfast in the privacy of your room when you wake up in the morning. There are two bathrooms, one for the double room and one for the living room, each with bathrobes and amenity kits especially designed for Hotel dei Mellini.

During your stay in Rome, you'll enjoy skip-the-line tours of the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

On September 21st, you'll transfer to Fiumicino airport where you'll fly nonstop to Dulles and arrive before dinner that same day.

Price: $7,154.

Includes round-trip and intra-country air for two, nine nights' accommodations with breakfast, transfers and excursions as described above.

As you'll note, I've left room in your budget so you can enjoy the culinary delights of the cities you're exploring - no European getaway is complete without amazing food!
