Talking Point

What do you want?

Now, let me be the first to admit we often want things that are not good for us. Not all 'wants' are godly. However, if God has a desired will, and we are made in His image, then it is appropriate for us to pay attention to the things we want.

I imagine that one of the things you and I might want is security. In fact, part of my fascination with the gospel is Jesus' offer of 'eternal' life--once the gift is received it cannot be revoked because God is faithful. Theologians will often say we are eternally secure. That's a security I want.

But I've noticed people often find security in things that are...well, less secure. They claim to find security in things like money, friends, success, and ability. If you've got money, know important people, can point to a great resume, and have some talent...security is yours. At least that's what many in our world have come to believe.

But I've come to discover an alternative to this worldly philosophy. The Scriptures speak of a security that comes through integrity.

He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity. (Proverbs 2:7)

Want security? Grab hold of integrity and don't let go.

At Alaska Bible College, we've embraced this idea. We are invested in training students to become servant leaders with Christ-like character. In God's household, integrity counts.

Lord, we want to be what you've called us to be so we can do what you've called us to do, and that, with great boldness!

Spiritual Life Focus Week

This year we will be exploring the theme of being READY FOR IMPACT. All of us want to make an impact in this world for Christ. But the Bible assumes we must be prepared, alert, and ready. This readiness doesn't require years of hard training so much as it requires a tender heart and focused mind. But what can we learn from others about this readiness? What does the Bible say?

Spiritual Life Focus week will begin Monday. Your professors and mentors will be equipped with some prompts to help frame our week-long campus discussion. In Tuesday's Chapel we will begin gaining some momentum as you'll have an opportunity to dig deeper into our theme and sign up for times of prayer in our newly renovated prayer room. There will also be opportunities for service and campus wide quiet times you can engage in. A schedule will be handed to you in Chapel.

Where is this going? Our week-long journey will lead us up to Winter Retreat. Bishop Fred Ledbetter will be our keynote speaker through the weekend. Having prepared our hearts for action, Pastor Ledbetter will challenge us from the Scriptures to embrace a life of faith...faith that overcomes!

I'm looking forward to what God has in store for us!

Please Note: Students requesting a ride to the retreat need to meet in the parking lot of ABC at 1 pm.
