HALL OF FAME: Last week, Dominican University Athletics announced the 2017 Hall of Fame Class, Phil Hesslau '84, Oscar Alvarez, '00, Matt Kochanowski '09, Sarah Budz '12 and the 1991 Rosary College Women's Basketball Team. The Dominican University softball team swept through their spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida, going a perfect 12-0 at the 2017 Gene Cusic Classic. The Stars outscored their opponents 115-30, to go undefeated on the team's spring trip for the first time in program history. Dominican belted nine home runs on the trip while the Stars' pitchers posted 67 strikeouts.
Following the trip, the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference recognized Dominican University's Gabby Curran (pictured) and Sydney Kuderna as the league's hitter and pitcher of the week respectively. Curran batted .552 with a pair of home runs while Kuderna was a perfect 8-0 on the week with 26 strikeouts and a 1.06 earned run average.
On their recent trip to Fort Myers, Florida, for the 2017 Gene Cusic Classic, the Dominican University baseball team won their final three games of the trip to go 5-3. The trip marked the first time in program history the Stars posted a winning record on the week long trip.
Over the Stars' final six games in Florida, junior Colin Janison batted .577 with four doubles while driving in eight runs and scoring another seven to claim the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Position Player of the Week honor. In the field, Janison was part of an infield that turned eight double plays on the week while also picking up a complete-game victory with ten strikeouts on the mound.
Riding a 15-match winning streak, the Stars are off to the best start in program history, including a perfect 11-0 mark in MCVL play to sit atop the Eastern Division with three weeks remaining in the regular season. Heading into the final ten matches of the regular season, the Stars lead all of NCAA Division III in blocks per set (2.69) and rank second in kills per set (12.81) and four in hitting percentage (.305).
The 2017 Dominican University Athletics Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, April 28, at 7pm in the Lund Auditorium. That night, the department of athletics will hand out its Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards as well as the Senior Scholar-Athlete award. All are welcome to attend. Senior Josh Mayberry was voted to the All-NACC First Team after the senior averaged 18.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists during his final season in a Stars' uniform. For his career, Mayberry amassed 1,681 career points, the second most in school history.
Junior Tim Robertson garnered All-NACC 2nd Team honors after averaging 18.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this past season.
Rookie Timiya Ray was voted to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Women's Basketball All-Freshman Team after leading the Stars to their most successful season since 2011-2012. Ray averaged 11.8 points and 7.5 rebounds on the season while leading the conference with 66 blocked shots.
Ben Walker was voted to the 2017 NACC All-Freshman Team after ranking third on the Stars at 6.7 points per game and shooting .448 from the field and .421 from three-point range. Walker was the second-leading scorer in the NACC amongst true freshmen.
The Dominican University men's volleyball team spent Monday, March 6, at Operation Support Our Troops. In total, 23 members of the Stars' program spent three hours packing boxes with items ranging from coffee and aspirin to suckers and popcorn that will be shipped to US troops overseas.
SAVE THE DATE: The Dominican University department of athletics 2nd annual golf outing is scheduled for Friday, July 28, at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. The outing is scheduled to be a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Last year we had 80+ golfers and expect to exceed that number in 2017 so make sure you mark your calendars today!
