Avondale Newsletter 21st June 2019

Stars of the Week

There was no particular theme this week and children were asked to choose their own class star of the week:

Dates for the Diary

Class attendance this week is:

School Uniform

At present there are a few children wearing trainers to school. Just a reminder that black flat shoes are school policy. If school shoes are broken then black PE pumps must be worn inside so that we are all consistent.

Class Assemblies

Listed below are the assemblies that will take place up to Summer. Most assemblies will take place at 2.50 pm in the School Hall. Please join us if you can.

Data Collection/Consent Forms

Just a reminder – please return all the updated forms that came home last week. Even if there are no changes, please let us know this. Thank you.

Breakfast & After School Clubs

There are a few places left for both of these – please get in touch asap if you want to reserve a place.

This week has been an extremely busy week for competitions:

Debating Competition

The Avondale team represented us extremely well on Tuesday at Blackburn Museum. Not only did they do well and enjoy the debating, they had the opportunity to look around the museum as well. Thanks to Mrs Pickup for organising.

Sports Days

Weather permitting revised dates for Sports Days are: KS1 - Wednesday 26 June 1:30pm and KS2 - Thursday 27 June 1:30pm

Well done Avondale cricketers – winning both of their matches. We secured a 285 v 194 win against St James’ and a 254 v 158 against Ashleigh. Great batting and fielding. An overall outstanding performance.

Tennis training took place at Darwen Tennis Club on Wednesday night. The children had a great experience playing on a real court. Thanks to Darwen Tennis Club for offering this free of charge.

The Rounders team played a friendly last night against Ashleigh and won convincingly. Well done!

We are passing on a huge thank you to Dominic Fitzgerald, the professional golf player at Darwen Golf Club. He has been giving Year 4 children FREE golf lessons at school, and they have benefitted tremendously from his expertise.

Reading Workshops

Thank you to those parents that attended the KS1 and/or KS2 reading workshops earlier this week. I hope that you found them useful and interesting. Thank you to Mrs Nuttall for organising these.

Author Workshop at Blackburn Rovers

Class 4B had an amazing day on Wednesday at Blackburn Rovers. All children came away with a signed book by the famous poet Matt Goodfellow and a ‘Match’ book annual.

Dance Festival at Darwen Vale

Last night was Darwen Schools' Dance Festival. We were represented at both KS1 and KS2. Both routines were very impressive and superbly choreographed. Thank you to Miss Bolton and Mrs Morgan for organising and all the parents who supported the event.

Year 5 Science Day at Darwen Vale

Year 5 had a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting day at Darwen Vale this week. Yet again, the children were a credit to the school.

Tower Wood

Last weekend some Year 6 children, Mrs Duckett, Mr Laycock, Miss Johnson and Mrs Crossley visited Tower Wood for the year 6 residential. An exciting and fun weekend was had. Kayaking on Lake Windermere and gill scrambling were key highlights, along with tree climbing, trapeze, marshmallow toasting and general fun!!! Thanks to all the staff for giving up their weekend. Almost 600 photos and videos have been uploaded to Google Classroom, the children will be given codes to view them.

Thanks for reading
