Seventeen-year-old Bianca is not the prettiest girl in her group of friends. She's very intelligent, maybe too intelligent to fall for a cocky jerk who's also a hottie called Wesley Rush. Actually she hates him with a passion. When he decides to turn Bianca's life upside down with just one word "duff". Let's just say that ended up with a coke in his face. Things at home aren't great either. In counters with Wesley occur more often and she actually likes his presence. This lead to a complicated relationship with him. With her best friends by her side and new auditions to her life she tries new things. She even discoveries Wesley's not a bad listener and that she might be falling for the guy she once hated.
I believe teens from ages 14+ will enjoy and relate more to the book. For instance, the character Bianca starts to push her friends away even though she feels shy, scared, and afraid after being labeled the "Designated.Ugly.Fat.Friend". I think many kids can relate to a time when they were scared or afraid to step out of their comfort zone, just like Bianca. Some people might disagree and say it's another dime romance. When a nerd turns into something they're not and the guy who never dates finally notices her and falls in love with her. Pretty much saying it's another 'cliche' romance. To me the book was more, it showed what some kids go through on the daily. Kids all ages have felt alone, been labeled something they're not, and has tried to change but still is judged -- unlike Bianca -- most kids don't get a makeover and then they're life is okay. I also like the real life situations such as her parents problems and how her father has been sober for years but her moms soon ruins that. This is such a relate-able book and that what intrigues me the most is how through all the problems Bianca end up happy. The book had some funny parts too to even out the craziness of the plot ,especially with the main characters such as Wesley Rush and his whimsy comments like "You must not hate me that much" (pg. 69). Making the book full of romance, drama and humor.
