Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

"We glimpse this call of discipleship in Genesis 12. One of the very first blessings we receive is of God to Abraham. God says, “I will bless you SO you will be a blessing to others.”" - Dawn

REFLECT

1. Dawn mentions that often when reading the Beatitudes, we begin making a list of who we ought to be in order to be blessed. Have you found this to be true? If so, what expectations do place on yourself to become bless worthy?

2. The Bible mentions God's blessings as early as in Genesis when God says to Abraham, "I will bless you SO you will be a blessing to others." What do you think this means?

3. Is there a time you felt God's blessing? Is there a time you felt anything but blessed?

4. The Benoit family makes it a practice to pay for other's meals in a drive-thru line. How might you integrate blessing others as a practice?

"So let us get to blessing! Let go of our calculated plans of who to bless and when, and let’s just get started! Let’s see just how far Jesus’ blessings go. Bless up!" - Dawn

Pray

We thank you, God, that you have blessed us with an abundance of gifts for the flourishing of your world.

May our life and labor reveal your love as we seek to share your promised reign with all creation. Amen.
