Newsletter 26th May 2017

From the Head…

The weather has been glorious this week and the children and staff have definitely made the most of being outside as you will see later on in the Newsletter. Remember to apply suncream daily to your child when we return after the half term holiday, and ensure they have a named hat to protect them from the sun. Please also ensure that your child has a named bottle of water with them every day; staying hydrated in this heat is crucial.

Over the holidays, please take some time to ensure that all summer uniform is named clearly; we have a huge amount of unnamed school uniform under the bridge waiting to be claimed. Thank you for your continued support in this matter.

I look forward to seeing you all after the half term break as we enter the final half term of the year. It is a very busy and exciting half term and there are lots of exciting things to look forward to.

Have a lovely half term, stay safe and I will see you all on Monday 12th June.

Kind regards

Miss Claire Holloway

Headteacher

Year 6

This week has seen Year 6 take to two wheels on the streets of New Eltham. The children had the opportunity to hone their cycle skills in the park then progress to learning how to safely cycle on quiet roads. It was a delight to see how much joy the children got from the freedom of being out on their bikes. Some of the more nervous children even surprised themselves at how confident they became by the end of the week.

Our preparations for Presentation Evening have also taken centre stage with our song rehearsals now being well under way. We have asked the children to pay special attention to learning their lines over half term so that when we return we can resume our rehearsals without the need for scripts.

We wish you all a safe and happy break and look forward to seeing you again for our final half term together!

Year 5

This week the children have been working incredibly hard during their assessments. They have shown a sensible attitude to the tests and have been applying their knowledge well. We have seen a great development in their test technique and the children are showing us that they are ready for Year 6.

5I have been busy rehearsing their assembly this week and they were very proud of their performance. Year 5 have been keen to continue to work as a team both during lessons and in the playground. This was extended to outside school when we visited Frognal House Residential Home . The children shared their brilliant pointillism and Monet inspired artwork with the residents. In addition to this, they also read some of their creative writing. It was great to see the children conduct themselves so well and socialise with an older generation.

Year 4

The children have really taken to using the iPads. This week our learning in RE was enhanced by looking at films, interactive text and a personal quiz. The children have also been sharing their personal experiences of Christianity, which was very moving.

On Wednesday afternoon we all visited All Saints’ Church. This is a familiar place but we were able to look at it with fresh eyes and use some of the vocabulary we had learnt, such as ‘pulpit’. The children took and annotated their own photos.

Year 3

Last week, the children not involved in rehearsing for the Stephen Jota concert had a wonderful art lesson taking inspiration from Andy Warhol. We learned a little about him and looked at some of the trends in his work - bright, unrealistic colours and repetition - before having a go ourselves. We used funky colours to make a dull, colourless picture of Obama more exciting before moving on and colouring photos of ourselves in the style of Warhol.

We have thoroughly enjoyed continuing our learning linked to ‘The Mousehole Cat’ and have been writing poems to ‘calm the storm cat’. The children very much enjoyed trying to imagine what it would have been like on a small fishing boat in the storm and this really shone through in their work.

Year 2

Last week, Year 2 looked at units of measure in their maths lessons. In our English lessons, we read about how Claude had enjoyed tea with the mayor as a reward for catching the robber at the art gallery. We combined both areas of learning for the week and took the opportunity make some scones. We did practical weighing, both in grams and millilitres, as we made our delicious scones. We then enjoyed a cream tea together in honour of Claude’s bravery! The children whipped the cream with an electric whisk and shared a pot of raspberry jam. In true British style, we made tea so that the children could enjoy a nice cuppa with their bakes! Miss Ireland joined us for our cream tea. Fun was had by all and tummys were nicely full!

Year 1

This week, Year 1 enjoyed a visit to the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Our visit included a planetarium show called Space Safari, which took us on a journey through outer space, visiting each planet along the way. The children were also ‘over the moon’ when they had the opportunity to touch part of a real meteorite! With the sun shining for us, we found the perfect spot for a picnic lunch in a walled garden within Greenwich Park. The children enjoyed playing together and particularly loved being chased by ‘a monster’ aka Miss Emmett. This week, the children were flabbergasted as they received another message from outer space and then, to their surprise, they saw the ‘real life’ Beegu walk past the window of the 1M classroom. After some screaming and pointing, a couple of brave children invited Beegu inside for a conversation. Beegu shyly told the children about her home planet and then they all hugged Beegu goodbye and sent her home until next year.

All the children in Year 1 would like to wish Miss Emmett and her fiance Mr Maizels a happy wedding day during half term. We are all looking forward to the photographs.

Reception

This week’s weather has been glorious and we have made the most of the warm sunshine bringing water play into our outside environment. Continuing our space topic we have been learning a song about the Solar System. The children recorded themselves singing it using the iPads. In both classes the children have listened to the story ‘Aliens love underpants’. They have designed their own aliens and pants, making up different names for them.

Nursery

Ahoy there shipmates!

In Nursery this week we have been learning about life as a pirate. We have created our very own pirate characters and given them pirate names.

The children have enjoyed designing treasure maps, thinking about which landmarks they should include. They have also had a go at labelling some of them with some impressive results from such young children.

All pirates need a sturdy ship to sail, so we have started to turn our role play area into a pirate ship based on the book ‘Pirates Love Underpants’. The children are very excited to start playing in it.
