BBC Rewind & Reminiscence Archive
This platform provides access to a selection of footage from the BBC Archives, designed to support reminiscence therapy.
The principle of reminiscence therapy is to assist people who have dementia to interact and converse in a natural way, by stimulating their long-term memory with material from the past. It is often the case that long-term memory can still function when the person’s working (short-term) memory is degraded. Tapping into long-term memory can make it possible once again for them to enjoy interacting with others, through their stories.
A number of reminiscence systems have been developed for people with dementia, based on photographs, photo books, boxes of objects and materials and interactive computer applications. The BBC wants to contribute to this growing set of supports for people with dementia and their carers by drawing on the enormous amount of photos, videos, and sound clips in its archives.
To begin, simply select a Theme (such as Sport, Events etc.) or a Decade (1930s, 1940s etc.) and choose whether you wish to view image, audio or video content. The results are randomised, however items can be 'favourited' to return to later, if you wish.

Wellbeing & Wildflowers by Grow Wild UK
We know you will have spent lots of time at home and indoors over the past few weeks, and we've been thinking about what (other than growing) connects us with plants and exploring how we can use the lessons from our flowered friends to help support our wellbeing through these challenging times.
Despite the lack of access to growing spaces, we were pleasantly surprised by all the ways in which we could connect with and learn from wildflowers. Here are our top findings:
1. Being patient
Plants can teach us a lot about patience. Wildflowers stay snuggled in their seeds, taking their time gathering the nutrients and strength they need, until they are ready to slowly germinate, grow, and eventually flower. Sometimes it can seem as if nothing is happening, but if we look carefully, we can see tiny changes every day. As humans, we often feel the need to change a situation in which we are uncomfortable, frustrated by or don’t have control over. Experiencing a global pandemic in full force is overwhelming and it can cause many of these feelings. However, if we pay attention, changes, however small they may seem, are happening every day. This is a positive reminder that this situation will eventually pass, just as the wildflowers will continue to grow.
2. Taking time out
Wildflowers won't be rushed. We've been following suit and taking some time out to reflect on the things we’ve achieved since Grow Wild’s launch. In turbulent times like these, it can feel disappointing if our work, personal lives and goals aren’t moving forward at the pace we’d like, and we can end up feeling less than productive. In these moments, it’s important to remind ourselves of what we have achieved, and celebrate the wins, however small they may seem.
Just as wildflowers will find a way to adapt to even the most challenging environments, at Grow Wild, we have had to adapt many of the activities we offer. It’s been an interesting challenge and one that’s certainly exercised our creative muscles! When the unexpected strikes, it’s important to pause and take time to make new plans or adapt those we had put in place in a way that means we can feel positive about them. This could mean taking certain projects online, rescheduling plans for a community garden project or connecting socially via virtual means instead of face-to-face.
Many of us are finding ourselves with some extra time on our hands at home, and whilst we are perhaps unable to go and bury our hands in the soil, there are plenty of wildflowers and UK native plants to learn about - growing doesn’t always have to be in a pot! British Sandwich Week
Celebrate the ultimate food-to-go during British Sandwich Week from 17-23 May 2020.
British Sandwich Week is a week-long celebration of the greatest food-to-go and quite possibly the most iconic British culinary invention, the Sandwich.
The humble sandwich is celebrated in all its glory during British Sandwich Week, and year-on-year the buzz around the occasion seems to grow with more and more companies using the commemorative celebration to promote their business.
#BritishSandwichWeek trends across Twitter and newspapers, magazines, TV shows and radio programmes join in celebrating what is a staple British lunch.
There were over 200,000 articles about British Sandwich Week, both online and across printed media. The BBC One Show featured the Sammies Sandwich Designer of the Year Winners, making sandwiches live on the show.
We hope to engage with our members for British Sandwich Week 2020 and continue to promote the sandwich. The dates for British Sandwich Week 2020 have been confirmed as 17-23 May so don’t miss out on the action.
How to make your own face mask
People in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are now being advised to wear face coverings while at the shops or on public transport to help limit the spread of coronavirus.
While medical face masks and respirators are prioritised for health and care workers, you may wish to make an attempt of making your own face covering.
Here's our guide to different types and step-by-step instructions on how to make them.
Whether you're handy with a sewing machine, enjoy cutting up old t-shirts or just want a quick fix, the principles are the same: the more layers of material the better, and the mask needs to fit snugly around the face, and you should be able to breathe comfortably.

Golden Oldies Sing & Smile
The Golden-Oldies Charity is well loved by hundreds of BANES residents, known for their regular Goldies Sing & Smile sessions. These are not choirs, but social groups where people come together to enjoy each other’s company and sing-a-long to the popular hits of the 50s onwards, from artists like Cliff Richard, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Petula Clark and many more. You don’t need to have a good singing voice to join in, just a love of music and good company.
Whilst the monthly sessions are currently closed due to the pandemic, they are pleased to continue to be providing mini live online singing sessions that you can get involved with and sing-a-long from home. Why not tune in on one or every Thursday at 2.30pm to their Facebook or YouTube channel? Or, watch pre-recorded at your convenience, completely free of charge.

BBC Exercising at Home – the BBC are offering tips on exercising at home, and The Green Goddess – “the original keep-fit queen of the 80s - is making a comeback on BBC Breakfast. Eighty-year-old Diana Moran will be doing exercises three times a week from self-isolation so viewers can follow along at home”.
Chair Yoga – for beginners and anyone wanting seated chair yoga.
General Work Out – aimed at older persons, can be done seated or
