Mentos and Soda Experiment by: peyton meier and savannah wells

Summary

When watching this demonstration, you should be amazed on how the Mentos react with the different types of soda. We will try five different types of soda: Sprite, Coke, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Big Red. We will putĀ fiveĀ Mentos in each two liter bottle of soda. You should expect an acid based explosion when the mentos react with the soda.

Revalant Chemistry Concept

1. An acid is the range of numbers 0 to 6 on the pH scale, when a base is the range of numbers 8 to 14 on the pH scale.

2. Our demonstration is an acid based reaction because coke is acidic.

Materials

  1. 2 packs of mentos
  2. 5 different types of sodas (2 liter)
  3. Measuring cup

Procedure

For this experiment, you will put 5 mintos in each soda bottle. Once the explosion happens, measure how much soda is left in the bottle. You will measure this using a measuring cup.

Results

  • Sprite- 5 1/2 cups
  • Mountain Dew- 6 3/4 cups
  • Coke- 4 1/4 cups
  • Dr. Pepper- 4 1/4 cups
