School Closed- Wednesday 15 August
See below letter from Mr Bryce Turner (Chapel Downs Board Chair)
Dear Parents/Caregivers of Chapel Downs kids.
You will have seen in the news media lately a lot of discussion about the negotiations currently taking place between the Ministry of Education and the NZEI (the teachers’ union). As these negotiations have not yet reached a satisfactory outcome, the NZEI has advised the Board of Trustees that the principal and teachers at our school will be taking part in nationwide strike action on Wednesday 15 August 2018.
As there will not be enough staff to safely look after our students, Chapel Downs Primary School will be closed during this strike. It is very important that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children on the day of the strike. There is also no after school care on the 15th August.
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the crisis that teachers, principals and schools are facing. We are currently facing a massive shortage of teachers, with less people wanting to train and join the profession. In order to attract and retain great teachers we need to improve both the pay and the conditions. Our teachers also need more resources and more support staff, especially when they are working with students that have additional learning needs.
Chapel Downs Primary School has fantastic teachers. We want them to be paid well for the work they do, and supported properly so they can get on with the wonderful job they do in teaching our children.
The Board of Trustees is aware of the inconvenience that this school closure will cause to parents, but recognises that improvements are essential in order for us to continue to deliver the very best education for our children. The Board supports our principal and teachers in their negotiations, and hopes that a satisfactory agreement will be quickly reached.
Thank you for your understanding.
Maths Open Morning
I am pleased to let you know that we are holding a Maths Open Morning for Parents on Thursday 16th August from 9.15 am until 11am. This is an opportunity for you to see what your children are learning in Mathematics at the different levels throughout school. The morning will start with a small presentation in the school hall followed by class visits. Morning tea will be served in the hall at 10.30am. We look forward to sharing our Maths learning with you on Thursday.
During the first week of term our junior school received a visit from the Star Dome team. They shared their amazing knowledge and resources on the solar system with some very excited children.
Next month all of our Year 6 students will experience a three day camp as part of our annual Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programme. EOTC programmes provide students with access to hands-on experiences that are not available inside the classroom.
