RING PATTERNS a look back at November 2017

In November, there were 12 specialty shows in four states including California, Oregon, Tennessee and Alabama. The show that garnered the highest number of collies entered at a specialty and also the largest turnout was for Judge Judie Evans at the Pacific Northwest Collie Club on Saturday, November 11 in Rickreall, Oregon. There were 50 collies entered along with 44 actually shown, 29 roughs and 15 smooths. Pacific Northwest Collie Club's Saturday specialty also pulled the largest number of rough collies for Judge Evans with 29 shown on the day.

The largest turnout for the Smooth Variety was 17 for Judges Janet Hitt at Sierra Nevada Collie Club and Lynn Butler at California Collie Fanciers.

CH Tallywood Indulgence earned four Best in Specialty awards during the month of November.

Best of Breed Awards in November: The month of November saw nine collies awarded Best of Breed honors ā€“ seven bitches and two dogs ā€“ four veterans (two rough bitches, one smooth bitch and one smooth dog) two rough bitches, one smooth bitch and one class rough bitch. The only winner of multiple BOB awards was CH Tallywood Indulgence (pictured above), who earned four.

GCH Demuir Barefoot Contessa was a Best in Specialty winner in November.

Cynclair Summer Breeze was one of nine Best in Specialty winners in November.
One of four veterans to earn Best in Specialty in November was GCHS Windkist's Ain't No Rest For The Wicked, PT, RAE, CAA, NA, NAJ, OF, OAP, OJP, XFP, CCA, VX.

At the All-breed Shows: Collies accrued one Reserve Best in Show, 19 Group placements, including three Group 1 awards and 12 National Owner-handled Series placements. The sole Reserve Best in Show was awarded to the rough collie, GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT by Judge Annella Cooper.

Those three Group 1 awards went to three rough collies -- one dog and two bitches: GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT, GCHG Sylvan Argent Hollywood And Vine and GCH Millknock's Firework At Mello-D, RN, HT, NAJ, NF, NFP, CA (pictured below).

GCH Millknock's Firework At Mello-D, HT, RN, CA, NAJ, NF, NFP had an award-winning month with a Best in Specialty and a Group 1.

The judges who saw the collie as the top herding dog of the day were: Michael Lanctot, Murrel Purkhiser and Debra Long Gschwender. Other placements included three Group 2s, seven Group 3s and six Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 15 times compared to four for the Smooth Variety.

Collies awarded one or more Herding Group placements in November: GCHB Breezy Acre's In Your Face, GCHG Sylvan Argent Hollywood And Vine, GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT, Sylvan Creston's Summer Breeze, CGC, GCHS Wild Wind's Don't Stop Believing, CD, RN, NAJ, GCHB Creekwood Thornacre Herself The Elf, CH Sylvan Argent Windsong Prizm, GCHG Creekwood Miss Behavin' , GCH Concord Picture This, GCH Millknock's Firework At Mello-D, RN, HT, NAJ, NF, NFP, CA.

The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 191 at Greater Ocala Dog Club in Florida on November 19. The award was a Group 4 and the honor went to the rough collie, GCH Concord Picture This. The judge was Victoria Jordan.

AKC National Owner-handled Series: Herding Group judges placed collies 12 times during the month. The roughs took 8 of those placements compared to four for the smooths. There were three Group 1 awards ā€“ all awarded to the Rough Variety.

Now for a bit of house cleaning. We had an omission in our October report: The month's largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 171 at Richland Kennel Club on October 1. The award was a Group 4 and the honor went to the smooth collie, GCH Aurealis Ambition. The judge was Harry (Butch) Schulman.
