GME Updates December 2021

GME Updates - Fall 2021

The new academic year is almost halfway over (!) and we were thrilled to welcome our new and continuing residents and fellows in July. We currently have 20 pathology residents, including 5 new PGY-1 residents who have joined us for combined AP/CP training. 5 residents will graduate from the program at the end of June 2022. There are a total of 31 pathology fellows across our 14 GME clinical fellowship programs that include training disciplines across anatomic and clinical pathology/laboratory medicine.

Our residents and fellows are an extremely talented and dedicated group who actively contribute to the department’s missions. It would be challenging to list all the clinical work, research projects, national and international presentations, quality improvement projects, and teaching efforts of the resident and fellow group, but it is substantial. I’m very honored to work with these individuals who are the future of pathology and laboratory medicine and I know our fellowship directors, faculty, coordinators, and other department members feel the same.

For most of our training programs, this time of year is recruiting season and that is certainly true for our residency program. We are again conducting our residency interviews virtually and currently have 67 interviews for 5 positions scheduled to take place between mid-October to mid-December. We have been meeting many qualified applicants and one of the highlights for me is asking each of them how they became interested in pathology. The fellowship directors are also busy with recruiting efforts, and I have been hearing positive things about their applicants as well.
