Marketo and Adobe are committed to helping communities cultivate the next generation of digital media makers, coders, and more, and it all starts with education. Join us in celebrating International Literacy Day (ILD) during the month of September. We hope to drive awareness of the importance of literacy throughout the world as a matter of dignity and human rights, and showcase its importance in developing the next generation of Marketers.

What is International Literacy Day?

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) declared September 8th as International Literacy Day (ILD) during their session in 1966. Since then communities across the globe have been celebrating with the purpose of educating others about the importance of literacy to individuals and communities.

How can you get involved?

Check out ways for you to join the Marketo community as we read, volunteer, and share our favorite books throughout the month of September.

Looking to be inspired?

We've collected a short list of our customers favorite books below.

Favorite Author: P.G. Wodehouse

"P.G. Wodehouse – my favorite author for writing books that bring a smile to your face. All of his books are masterpieces – books about Jeeves, or Psmith, or Blandings Castle, or the Oldest Member, and his golf stories. Every word in his books is perfect."

Shantanu Narayen, Chairman, President & CEO

Join a Marketo User Group

Throughout September MUGs will be celebrating ILD through volunteer opportunities, book drives, and more.

Favorite Books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Anna Karenina, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Middlesex, and Crime and Punishment.

“It’s tricky for me to pick just one book. While they are all very different, they represent unique points of views and take you to a different place, time, and world. That’s the best thing about reading; you get to hear someone else’s story, go inside their imagination, and understand the world from different perspectives – it sparks the creativity that lives within all of us.”

Ann Lewnes, EVP and CMO

Read and Share Your Experience

Read with your family, and community throughout September and log your reading time to help Save the Children reach 100 million minutes. For everyone who logs time reading from September 3-30 and shares what they are doing on Twitter using #literacyday and tags Adobe and Marketo, Adobe will donate $10, up to $10,000 to Save the Children.

Favorite Book: To Kill a Mockingbird

"In one book you find incredibly powerful narratives on racial injustice, the loss of innocence, courage and compassion. The lessons in the book are timeless and the characters have incredible depth."

Steve Lucas, SVP, Strategic Advisor

Volunteer Your Time

Volunteer in your own community with a local education-based non-profit or library. We'd love for you to share your pictures and stories with us so we can share them with the Marketing Nation! Email us at CX@Marketo.com to share your story with us.

Favorite Books: Breakfast of Champions, #GIRLBOSS

"I love Breakfast of Champions, because Kurt Vonnegut is my hero and also because I really enjoy reading satire on America. For #GIRLBOSS, Sophia Amoruso is the definition of a fearless marketer and incredible woman in leadership. It’s an entertaining read about overcoming one of the most public failures anyone could experience and what she learned."

Sarah Kennedy, VP, Global Marketing, Digital Experience

Favorite Book: The Boys in the Boat

"It’s rare that one story covers so many aspects I find interesting & motivating: grit, personal development, what the pinnacle of team work looks like, determination and winning."

Matt Zilli, VP, Sales GTM
