Geography

It's an Archipelago of islands located in the northern part of the Caribbean Sea. It's also surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Mountains: Pico Turquino, El Yunque, Pan de Guajaibón, and Gran Piedra

  • In general, Cuba is quite subtropical, with an average temperature of 25°C (77°F) in Winter and 31°C (88°F) in Summer.
  • Rain comes in heavy showers, and lasts for an hour (or two).
  • Hurricanes occur during the summer.
  • Agriculture is an important part in economy.
  • Less than 10% to the GDP, but employs 20% of the working population.
  • About 30% of the country's land is used for crops.

Culinary Techniques

Most methods of cooking used in Cuba are usually Steaming, Baking, and Boiling.
Deep-frying is NOT a favored Cuban cooking method of preparing food.

Dining Etiquette

Only eat after the host says "Buen Provecho".
Don't switch knives and forks. Knife stays in right hand, fork remains in your left.
(Restaurant) To waiter, if knife and fork are parallel, it means you are done eating.
When not holding utensils, hands should be visible above the table.
Passing food: all dishes passed to the left.
