Planning and Prescribing Endurance Training: A Biopsychosocial Approach Dr Andy Kirkland, University of Stirling

Invitation to an Online Workshop on How to Plan and Prescribe Endurance Training

Tuesday the 17th of December 2024 @ 19:30 to 21:00

UK Time

Introduction

Are you interested in optimising the ways you plan and prescribe endurance training in endurance sport (triathlon, cycling and running)? Do you struggle to make sense of current trends in doing or have challenges with athletes who do not engage with your coaching in the way you would like to? Are you trying to make sense of and apply methods such as:

  • The Norwegian Method
  • Prescribing training using blood lactate measurement
  • Zone 2 Training
  • Different Periodization models.

Well this workshop may be for you. In the first 45-minutes, I will present on the following themes:

  1. Current challenges and flawed assumptions in how planning and prescribing training is done in endurance sport.
  2. Making sense of the complexity of human adaptation (through a biopsychosocial lens).
  3. Assessing the needs of your athletes and prescribing training through case-formulation.

Then, depending on numbers, we will have breakout rooms to discuss your views, perspectives and implications on what it means for your coaching practice.

Who I am and Why am I Holding the Workshop?

I am Andy Kirkland Ph.D. a Lecturer in Sport Coaching at the University of Stirling, a Chartered and BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist and experienced triathlon coach. I have worked with leaders in the endurance sport industry, top coaches and athletes for over 20-years, including the likes of Joe Friel and Chrissie Wellington. There have been personal coaching successes too.

I want to 'test the water' with other coaches on the methods of coaching I have developed over the years, drawing on methods developed from medicine and beyond to do so. Your views and perspectives are important to me and my hope is that I can influence your practice a little too.

If you would like to attend, please complete the expression of interest form below. This will help me plan for numbers. There are a few details to share:

  1. There is no cost to you. All I ask is that you contribute to discussions and ask questions
  2. That the workshop will be held on Microsoft Teams and it will be recorded. I will be taking notes and saving your comments to guide me with developing further resources, but won't store any information beyond 7-days that could identify you.
  3. That I hope I may whet your appetite to come and study with us on our MSc. in Sport Performance Coaching (Online) at the University of Stirling.
  4. Note that by completing the expression of interest form, I will send you a link to Microsoft Teams. You may share this link with others too but I would prefer if everyone completed the expression of interest form.
