5 Events Not to Miss at This Year's Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival June 3 - 12

It's here. After a long winter, festival season has finally arrived. Time to break out your lawn chairs and blankets, your sunglasses and flip flops, and get ready to soak in the sounds and sights of summertime at the 2016 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival.

As always, we've planned hundreds of free activities to kick off the unofficial start to summer. Here are the top 5 events you don't want to miss this year.

1. Opening Night Headliner: Michael Franti and Spearhead

Friday, June 3 I 7:30 - 9 pm I Dollar Bank Main Stage at Point State Park

What better way to say hello to summer than with "The Sound of Sunshine" himself, soul rocker Michael Franti? Long known for his globally conscious lyrics, powerful performances, and dynamic live shows, Franti has continually been at the forefront of lyrical activism, using his music as a positive force for change.

Franti and his band Spearhead, known for their authentic and uplifting music, have found global success with multi-platinum songs like "Say Hey (I Love You)”, the chart breaking 2010 release of The Sound Of Sunshine. Franti and his band guarantee a show that will be thought provoking as well as energetic.

2. Carin Mincemoyer's "Dandelions"

Daily I 12 - 9 pm I Gateway Four @ Gateway Center

Things will be looking dandy in Downtown Pittsburgh, thanks to this public art installation by Carin Mincemoyer. “Dandelions” uses the form of street signs to call attention to the humble plant, which, despite its reputation, is a beautiful and nutritious plant that often grows in even the toughest environments, like city sidewalks. This pioneer species, sending its taproots down into the tiniest cracks and paving the way for other plant communities, is an apt symbol for the trailblazers among us.

3. Jesse Best - Multiverse Wall

Daily I 12 - 9 pm I Gateway Lawn at Gateway Center

This project will be a two-sided experience for the viewer consisting of a different abstract dimension on each wall. The wall will be comprised of several individual paintings that when connected, become a gateway to another world. The viewer can then circle the piece to decide which journey they will experience.

4. Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires

June 8 I 7:30 - 9 pm I Dollar Bank Stage at Point State Park

"The Flying Eagle of Soul" will take the stage mid-way through our Festival for a performance like no other. Bradley is known for his emotional and riveting live show and was named #1 on Paste Magazine’s “Best Live Acts of 2015” list. He’s taken his show to venues and festivals across the globe including Coachella, Glastonbury and Primavera Sound. Bradley’s also performed on many famed stages including NYC’s Beacon Theatre and the Apollo Theater—the same place his sister took him to see his idol James Brown perform when he was just 14 years old.

5. Gale by Ian Brill

June 9 I 12 - 9 pm I Fairmont Pittsburgh, part of 2016 CREATE Festival

Gale is an immersive, architectural light Installation, that uses LED-light-generated programming to simulate the impression of strong winds and give an illusion of movement. While at times the illusion is more abstract than representational, the performance of the computers enacting its generative algorithms comes across as the character of an ebbing and flowing windstorm.
