St Joseph's Newsletter Term Four, Week Four

I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.” Nelson Mandela

Dear Families and Friends

Welcome to Week 4. In the business of school life, it is important to remind ourselves of our focus as members of a Catholic School community. This is captured by our vision statement which reads:

“Inspired by Mary Mackillop we strive to achieve excellence in education and pastoral care, foster well-being, develop strong values and include all cultures and community members.”

Our motto at school for the remainder of the year will be: "Don't count the days, make the days count." If we do just count the days, we will miss opportunities to enact our vision statement. This is a message that is consistently being reinforced with students and we look forward to participating in the many exciting opportunities that lie ahead over the remainder of the school year.

All Saints Day

Thank you to Mrs Rudyard for organising the All Saints Day Mass for Pre-Primary - Year 6 students. The Mass will be held in the Library at 8:30am tomorrow and families and friends are most welcome to attend.

Kindergarten Orientation Day

Tomorrow we welcome our Kindergarten students for 2019. They will spend time in the Kindy classroom getting to know their new environment and meeting fellow classmates. Parents and carers will participate in an information session followed by a cup of tea. The orientation is from 8:00am-10:00am.

Care Packages

We are in the process of collecting items for hampers which we will distribute to those in need in our community. In addition to long life food items, every day necessities such as first-aid and hygiene products would be most welcome. Items can be dropped in at the office or given to children's classroom teachers. A number of students have begun competitions such as "Guess the number of lollies in the jar" to raise money for this cause. Children are invited to bring a gold coin with them to school to participate in these initiatives. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Birthday Parties

Understandably, children become very excited when they are having a birthday party and inviting other students from school to celebrate with them. What can sometimes be forgotten is the impact felt by students who are not invited. If your child is having a birthday party, please give invitations to your child's teacher to distribute. This will be done discretely and in a way that won't cause disruption to our regular program. Thank you in anticipation of you support and understanding.

Christmas Concert

Our preparations for the Christmas Concert on Thursday 29th November are now in full swing! If you have a particular talent (sewing, making props, etc) that may be useful in the lead up to and during our concert, please contact your child's teacher. We are also looking for volunteers who are willing to assist in selling food on the night.

With 104 families represented at St Joseph's, the cost of hiring the Leisure Centre will be covered if each family pays $5. Please send the money to school with your child, or see Di in the office for card payments. This payment go towards the use of the Leisure Centre for a whole school practice on Friday 23rd November and entry for your family on Thursday 29th November.

Positive Partnerships

On Thursday 22nd November, a St Joseph's staff vs students football match will take place at the town oval to raise awareness and funds for the many Australians who are diagnosed with autism each year. The match will take place from 5 - 7pm and sausages will be available for purchase. We invite all St Joseph's families and friends to come along, kick the footy and support this worthy cause.

.

P & F Meeting

Our next P & F meeting will be on Tuesday 6th November at 'The Grande' at 5:00pm. As this will be the second last meeting for the year, we would love to see as many parents, carers and friends in attendance as possible. We will be discussing arrangements for the Christmas Concert as well as the St Patrick's Quiz night in March next year. Again, the more volunteers we have for these events the greater the success they will be!

Football News

Last week we welcomed staff and students from KDHS to participate in a football match against our senior students. It was terrific to see the great sportsmanship with which the game was played and the terrific skills being displayed by both schools. Congratulations to the staff who organised this event and we look forward to many more games of football to come.

Reports

Teachers are currently busy preparing students Semester 2 reports which will be sent home during the final week of school. In recognition of the amount of work that is involved in making accurate and detailed statements regarding student social and academic progress, a day is given to each teacher to assist them in meeting the demands of reports in addition to carrying out their regular planning and programming responsibilities. I commend the teachers on the extra time and effort they are putting towards writing these reports.

Classes for 2019

An announcement will be made in next week's newsletter regarding classroom staffing for 2019.

Condolences

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs Deb Rocke whose father passed away on Tuesday morning.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

ALL SAINTS DAY

All Saints’ Day is the beginning of a two-day celebration of the saints and those who have died. We celebrate the communion of saints, the union of prayer and love between saints on earth and the saints in heaven.

Some ordinary people performed some extraordinary acts of love and compassion in their time following in the footsteps of Jesus. The stories of Mary, Mother of Jesus, St Joseph and St Mary MacKillop, teach us many ways to follow Jesus Christ.

ALL SAINTS DAY MASS THURSDAY 1ST NOVEMBER

We invite the St Joseph’s School community to join us at Mass to celebrate All Saints Day tomorrow, Thursday 1st November at 8.30am in the school library.

Mrs Rudyard

Year Three

Last week we went on an excursion to Lake Argyle. We learnt about the plants and animals that live in and around the lake. We also got to swim in the infinity pool and had a really yummy BBQ lunch. Thank you to Lake Argyle for having us and to Mr Jamie, Miss Brianna, Miss Gehrmann and Miss Di for helping to make our excursion a success. It was the best day EVER!

In English we have been learning about audience, persuasive language and developing a script. We used all of these skills to create some entertaining adverts using iMovie. Our adverts will be showcased this Friday at our class assembly.

In Mathematics we have been focusing on maps and coordinates. We have also learnt about the differences between pyramids and prisms and have been completing some really fun Kahoot quizzes. We have begun to work with money and have been learning about how to calculating change.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Canteen Volunteers Wanted

Miss Kris is looking for parents or friends of the St Joseph’s community who may be able to lend a hand. As they say, many hands make light work! If you can assist in any way, please have a chat with Kris or the Principal.

St Joseph’s School Uniforms

At St Joseph’s School we take great pride in our appearance. The school uniform is also an important aspect of child health and safety. It is a requirement that all students wear a St Joseph’s uniform (including a hat with our logo) that is purchased from our uniform shop. Similar items bought elsewhere may not be worn to school.

Please note that our “no hat, no play” policy will be enforced.

See our website for a full range of uniform items.

Uniforms may be purchased at any time from our office.

Praying the Rosary

Sr Marcella will lead us in one decade of the rosary each Friday at 7:35am on the grass outside the administration building. Please feel welcome to join us for five minutes of prayer.

New Enrolment Policy

The West Australian School Education Act (1999) stipulates that information about immunisation status and date of birth must be supplied when applying to enrol at school. As of 2018, a child’s birth certificate and immunisation documents must be provided before they can commence their schooling at St Joseph’s.

Thank you for your cooperation.
