There are several ways to submit Class Notes:

  1. Submit news via email to classnotes@episcopalhighschool.org.
  2. Contact your Class Correspondent by phone, mail, or email.
  3. Write your news in the space provided on the Roll Call reply card and mail it with your annual gift.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to write. Schuyler writing here, and I’ll offer my own news to kick things off: Last summer, I decided to resign from advertising sales after 15 years and take time off to recalibrate and figure out my career path. My first stop was a one-month Ashtanga yoga teacher training in Koh Phangan, Thailand.

From there I spent a week in Hoi An and Danang in Vietnam, followed by a week in the Canggu area of Bali. This was my first time to Southeast Asia, and I am dying to get back! I have spent the remaining time visiting high school and college friends in Jackson Hole, London, and Dubai. For the time being, I have decided to plant myself in Charlottesville, which does feel like home even though I’m 15 years out of college! So again, we’ll see where I land in the next couple of months, but I’ve been looking at jobs all over the map (literally!) and enjoying being thoughtful about the next steps in my career before I head back into the grind.

I regularly see Hattie Gruber (also a world traveler, as many of you know — most recently on safari in Africa with her mom!), Will Nisbet ’01, and Brenton Hardee ’02. I also speak with PX Head, who is still down in Atlanta and doing well.

Summers Clarke Lacy enjoyed ringing in the New Year with Hattie at their home in Mount Pleasant, S.C. She and her husband, David, are enjoying raising their son, Finley, who will be 1 on Valentine’s Day! He’s a very happy little man, as evidenced by the photo!

Sarah Brown Love has exciting news: she had her first child, Samuel McDowell Love, who was born on June 22, 2019! She and her husband, Craig, are adjusting to life balancing their amazing boy and Sarah’s three barre studios that she continues to run in Richmond.

Maisie Cunningham Short and her husband, Andy, are embracing the parenting of their son, Emmett, who is now 18 months old! She has also seen Elizabeth Hossfeld on her visits to Florida and Carlie Hooff Casella when she’s back in DC.

Lillian Smith Teer is doing well down in Wilmington, N.C., working for Live Oak Bank and raising her daughter, Lilly, “our 2-year-old boss”! She’s looking forward to seeing everyone at the Reunion!

James Barmore, who is also in Wilmington, has his hands full with his now 2-year-old daughter and another baby due in April. James sees a few other EHS grads, including Lillian, Lizzie Wellons Hartman ’98, and Stewart Poisson Gray ’96.

Betsy Watts Metcalf writes that all is well with her family of four down in Atlanta. She took her youngest daughter, Grace, up to D.C. in December and stayed with Brittanny Wildman Meierling and her family in Alexandria. Brittanny is Grace’s godmother so they took this opportunity to go to The Nutcracker, which was such a treat for Grace! Betsy and her husband, David, took a trip to Argentina last fall to celebrate their 15th anniversary. Wow, time flies — congratulations! Not surprisingly, she said it was an amazing trip and highly recommends it!

Anne Perry Swift is still in Austin and now a mother of three! Kate is 6, Charlie is 4, and Sam is 9 months. They are all adorable, not surprisingly — see the picture of her clan!

Kate (6), Charlie (4), and Sam (9 months), children of Anne Perry Swift ’00.

I sadly missed seeing Zsolt Parkanyi when I was in Dubai, but he is doing well as always! He recently completed his executive MBA at INSEAD, with graduation taking place in Singapore in December. This accolade was a culmination of 15 months of enriching self-development. He and his family took this opportunity to spend Christmas discovering Singapore and Kuala Lumpur before returning to Dubai for New Year’s. Congrats, Zsolt — I’m sure that felt like a long road at times but sounds like the effort was/will be worth it!

Last but not least, Vince Van Dillen writes that he is doing well and still living in Annapolis. He was accepted into the Harvard University’s CORe Program for business and is looking forward to starting this year. At the same time, he is also working in the security and law enforcement industry and doing ride-alongs and possible auxiliary work for the Annapolis police.

It was so great to hear from everyone!

Libby Seaton Ayoob is still teaching and running the student council at the Marist School in Atlanta. She and her husband baptized their second son, Theodore Barron Ayoob, at their church, Perimeter Church, in Atlanta. Everyone is happy and healthy!

Leah Kannensohn Tennille and her family welcomed a daughter, Ann Tapley Tennille, on September 18, 2019. Her big brothers, Townsend and Bode, are thrilled to have a baby sister!

Elliot Conklin started a nonprofit in 2019 called the Kingsbury Wellness & Learning Group, which is dedicated to improving access to clinical and educational services for families with learning and behavior challenges. They’ve had a strong first year! He lives with his son, Sidney, in Bethesda.

Peter Anthony and his husband celebrated their 17th anniversary on February 1 this year. He is battling cancer, so please keep him in your prayers. He is looking forward to our 20th Reunion in summer 2021, as are we all!

Crandall Close Story writes that she and her family are well. They met up with Sihler Branch and her family at Dinosaur World in Kentucky last summer.

Sihler Branch ’01 and family at Dinosaur World.

Will Nisbet spent five days at the end of January of this year skiing in Aspen with John Vogler, Kit McClendon ’02, and Eliot Pierce ’03 (among others). He says, “Other than being one-tenth of the athletes we were in high school, it was fun to tell stories about what hasn’t changed with all the life changes.”

Beezie McLaughlin Sayers ’01, holding her son, Cooper, and Emily Klim Schott ’01, holding her son, Teddy, at Cooper’s baptism in October.

Annie Johnston Dodd was married to Andrew Dodd on October 19, 2019, in Los Cabos. Andrew is the general manager at the Gjelina, a Michelin star farm-to-table restaurant in Venice, Calif., where they live. Liza Sarn was her maid of honor, and Jack Halloran was a groomsman. Jack introduced the bride and groom to each other! Jeb Stuart and William Wren ’09 were also in attendance. Annie’s brother, Trip Johnston ’90, officiated the wedding. He lives nearby in San Diego, where he and his wife are both federal public defenders. Annie just took a new job as a creative director at a small ad agency called the Many, while she continues to work on her side project, therottenappl.es, which builds awareness of gender inequalities in the workplace, specifically in Hollywood, and works to further the push for final ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Anne Gilbert Chase’s automatic email reply states that she is currently climbing in Pakistan until late September.

McCoy Penninger, Brenton Hardee, and a bunch of EHS folks helped Eloise and Will Nisbet ’01 celebrate their wedding in France. To cut down on his travel costs, McCoy officiated the wedding in exchange for a little extra cash.

Spencer and Kat Hutchison Merritt welcomed a baby girl, Robin Arrington, on May 13, 2019. Their son, Joe, is adjusting well to his “big brother” status. Kat still works in higher ed, consulting for Blackboard. If you’re ever in Raleigh, give her a shout!

The children of Kat Hutchison Merritt ’02 and sister Dorothy Hutchison Driscoll ’04 during a recent visit to Charlotte: Robin Merritt (3 months), Joe Merritt (2.5), Henry Driscoll (1), Will Driscoll (1), and Janie Driscoll (3).

Peter Park and his wife, Julia, welcomed their son, Graham, to the world in early September, just in time for the Woodberry game. He slept through the whole thing.

Tim Brown writes, “I’m not sure when I last provided an update, and I have regrettably fallen out of touch with most of you, so I hope you don’t mind a slightly longer update. The last few years have been quite the adventure! In April 2017, I finally embarked on a journey I had been diligently saving and planning for over the past 10 years. The goal was lofty — to take a motorcycle around the world. In that endeavor, I failed, but the two-year journey I did took me from Canada to Argentina and far exceeded my wildest dreams.

Top: Tim Brown ’02 on the motorcycle that he rode from Canada to Argentina. Above: Tim Brown ’02 and Matt Draper ’02 in Mexico.

“After roughly six months touring through national parks and music festivals across Canada and the U.S., I left the English-speaking world and entered Mexico on Christmas Eve, 2017. My route took me down through Baja, California and then crossing to the mainland at Mazatlan. I met with our classmate Matt Draper in southern Mexico, and together we explored many Mayan ruins hidden deep in the jungles of Campeche and Chiapas. Matt is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in political science at the University of California at San Diego. I continued solo south through the rest of the Central American countries, before crossing from Panama to Colombia through the San Blas Islands with my bike in a sailboat. I spent three months exploring Colombia, probably my favorite country on the trip despite losing my passport, most all my other important documents, and having to rebuild my engine after breaking down halfway up a very remote volcano (good stories to tell over beers).

“Over the next year, I moved slowly through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and northern Argentina. Finally in May, after wrestling with the decision for a long time, I decided going farther south in the winter was just not much fun. I spent a final week in Mendoza, Argentina, where I left my bike at a vineyard, and returned to the U.S. to work, save up, and plan the next leg of my journey, hopefully to start this coming January.

“Update: I did return to my bike and have spent the last month working my way down to Patagonia.”

Elizabeth Lankford writes, “I am excited to share that I am running to represent the 6th district (the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Norfolk) in Virginia’s State Senate. As a small business owner, I am eager to fight to keep Virginia open for business. If you are interested in following, I have a Facebook page, and my campaign website is www.LankfordforVA.com.”

Susanne Inman Frayser and her husband, Pete, welcomed their third child, Leila Kathryn Frayser, on April 23. Big brothers Jackson (4 years old) and Teddy (2) are thrilled to have a little sister in the mix.

Leila Kathryn Frayser, daughter of Susanne Inman Frayser ’02.

Tiffin Thompson writes to say that she had an amazing experience working in Greece this past summer. She participated as the project architect for a research team funded by Dumbarton Oaks and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers to study and architecturally document a series of small Byzantine chapels on Crete. Tiffin works as an architect in Kansas City, Mo., where her husband, Max, is completing his OB-GYN residency.

Arthur Armstrong was here but couldn’t think of anything relevant to say. Oh, he had a blast at Hunt Kushner’s wedding back in June. He is still the brightest person in his first grade class, though his students get annoyed when he reminds them of that. Also, he is now a homeowner. The door is always open if you find yourself in the Palm Springs, Calif. area.

Blair Harbour Moreau and her husband, Geoffroy, welcomed their son, Guillaume Alexandre Moreau, on November 9. Blair will be celebrating 15 years in New York City this winter. Tiffin Thompson and her husband, Max, visited them in the West Village shortly before he was born.

Lauren Vance writes, “I recently moved back to Lexington, Va., and joined the career and professional development team at Washington & Lee University. I am advising students and engaging with alumni and employers, with a focus on the finance and consulting industries. I got to see a few EHS alumni this year — including many at an exciting weekend in New Orleans with Alexis Claire Tripplehorn Hall, Elisabeth Putney Mygatt, Julia McKenzie Johnson, Rebecca Pomeroy Shores, and Laura Duncan Scott! Now that I am back in Virginia, I also get to visit with Melanie and Berend van Roijen over in Charlottesville. Reach out if you’re in the area!”

Anne Arnold Glenn writes, “I’m living in Winston-Salem, N.C., with my husband, Locke, and our three kids: Eli (6), Gardner (4), and Addy (1). I haven’t seen many EHS people lately, but I would love visitors!”

Josh and Eliza Smith Dunn welcomed their second daughter, Ann Marie Dunn, on July 27, 2019.

I hope everyone from the Class of 2003 is doing well. We love hearing from you, so please feel free to send any updates my way!

Congratulations to those who have recently welcomed children into their families.

Molly King Mouledoux and her family welcomed a baby girl, Virginia Vernon Mouledoux, on October 14, 2019. She reports that her family is settling in to life with two kids! Luckily, big sister, Frances, adores her new baby sister.

Jarrett Bell and his family welcomed a daughter, Hazel, who was born on May 26, 2019.

On April 8, 2019, Josh Glubiak and his wife, Meg, welcomed their third child, Charlotte. Her siblings, William and Hadley, are obsessed. University of Virginia basketball fans may remember that date, because their team won the NCAA men’s championship on the same day.

Classmates — To be truthful, Molly and I both completely forgot the Class Notes deadline, so I am using my insider status to submit this late edition. The result is that I haven’t actually asked anyone for news, so what I’m serving up instead is a few tidbits from EHS and a couple updates from classmates I’ve seen or spoken to recently.

My partner-in-crime in the Advancement Office, Katharine Farrar ’07, recently got her tonsils out, which meant two very sad and unnaturally quiet weeks without her in the office while she made a painful recovery. Luckily, Charley and Sallie Stillwell took her in for week two of recovery and provided care, puzzles, and lots of HGTV while she returned to fighting shape. Having her over in the Head of School’s residence made it much more convenient to deliver McFlurries and also reminded me, once again, that working at Episcopal is not like a normal job. Nothin’ like a week at the boss’s house to make you grateful for your community!

In other office news, I am extremely over-the-moon excited that later this year, Ann deSaussure Biondi ’08 will arrive from the West Coast to join Episcopal’s communications team! Both deSaussure sisters on campus at once! It may possibly be an EHS first to have siblings working here at the same time. While I cannot take credit for the incredible talents of Frances or Ann that landed them jobs here, no one can deny that my attempts at playing puppet-master for the deSaussure family have been incredibly successful so far.

Episcopal hosted an EHS CONNECT event in Chapel Hill in early February, and I was thrilled that Mary Lide Parker happened to be in town and served on the host committee and as one of our panelists. Two of our young alumni who are attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill peppered our panelists with questions, and everyone was understandably fascinated by her adventurous career. While I couldn’t make the trip, I was very gratified afterward to see in photos that Mary Lide unapologetically sported a flat brim hat for this business-casual event and reminded everyone that she is going to do her thing and be awesome doing it, thank you very much. No one objected in the slightest.

In February, I took my first trip without my daughter, Goody, to hit up Orange Beach, aka Floribama, with Kingsley Trotter, Sarah Montz Harcus, Molly Wheaton, and Peyton Killeen Walling. We were unofficially celebrating the fact that Kinglsey is getting married, and doing nothing together was so, so much fun.

After winning three Emmys for her video production work, Adrian Hopffgarten has been promoted to senior producer and director at Green Buzz Agency in Alexandria.

Hope everyone is doing great. Please reach out anytime you are in D.C., have news, or have a question about Episcopal. I am your humble servant.

Time flies! As I told my classmates when I asked for updates for these Class Notes, it feels like we just submitted updates for the last edition. Still, my classmates come through with excellent updates of all kinds, as always.

Admittedly, though, as the deadline for submitting our Class Notes approached, I reached out to my classmates once more asking for updates, and also let them know we were likely at a record low response rate for our Class Notes at the time. Fortunately, as Tucker Clarkson put it, “this cry for help” worked, and increased our contributions substantially. Tucker kindly shared that he and his wife, Rebecca, are still in New Orleans. They encourage anyone who’s up for a good old-fashioned New Orleans time to come visit. Tucker also says, “Life is good.”

Alex Hess recently moved to Ithaca, N.Y., and is studying for his MBA at Cornell. He still spends quite a bit of time in New York City and has recently spent quality time with Charles Sangueza as well as JB Reefer and his lovely wife, Erica.

Whit Slagsvol follows up with some exciting updates in his professional world. He is “still lawyering” in Charleston and is in the third year at Slagsvol Law Firm, with his Boykin spaniel, Bacchus, by his side. (Hat tip to Fritz Reuter ’07 for breeding and raising the most beautiful Boykin crosses who have ended up in the homes of many Episcopal families.) He successfully secured a number of hemp licenses and investors to start a processing company (Deepwood Extraction and Greater South Hemp Company). In his third business venture, Whit reports he is pursuing a provisional patent on his headphone product, which he hopes to pitch in the next few months. In Whit’s words, “That is more or less the saga of Whit.” Whit, you are leaving us all with bated breath for an update on the elusive headphones with the next set of Class Notes. We hope the saga continues!

Wes Graf graces many Episcopal alumni with his presence throughout the year. Among multiple minireunions, he went to a friend’s wedding along with Clarence Mills ’03, Graye Pelletier Todd ’03, Hannah Baldwin Ozburn ’03, and Lauren Pirrung Gilbert ’03.

Wes also helped Marguerite Kleinheinz Stoner celebrate her 30th birthday in Mexico in December, along with many other classmates. (Amazing to think that most of these friends also helped Marguerite celebrate her 15th birthday!)

Happy 30th Birthday, Marguerite! Jack Sheldon, Shaw Cornelson ’04, Matt Stoner, Wes Graf ’08, Matt Clark, David Brady, Eliza Coker ’08, Leah Andress Brady ’08, Amanda Weisiger Cornelson ’08, Ann Gordon Pelletier Eisenzimmer ’08, Marguerite Kleinheinz Stoner ’08, Clay Dunnan Maxwell ’08, Grover Maxwell, and Chris Eisenzimmer.

Spencer Graves reports that he and Ashton Yarnall ’13 are engaged! Spencer feels this is “probably Class Notes worthy.”

Spencer Graves ’08 asked Ashton Yarnall ’13 to marry him … and she said, “Yes!”

Ann deSaussure Biondi married Jamie Biondi in a family-only ceremony in her childhood backyard this past fall.

Lee Carter married Carolyn Barnwell on September 28. They had lots of Episcopal alumni there to celebrate the nuptials, including Dylan Harry, Tucker Clarkson, Jeremy Austin, Tom Weaver ’08 (Lee’s best man), Todd Becker, Zach Glubiak, Ian Day, Avery McIntosh, Eliza Carter ’10, Mary Robert Carter ’12, Jack Cater ’76, Alex Bocock ’76, Jack Bocock, and Andrew Carter. Of course I asked Lee for a photo of everyone together, but I imagine everyone was too busy celebrating to gather for a giant group photo.

Trina Brady Hooker and her husband, Cahill, welcomed daughter Leslie Jane “Janie” Hooker into their family on September 15, 2019. Elizabeth Dale Uhrinek, Emily Urquhart, and Grace Chesson visited Trina (and Janie!) in sunny Texas this past winter.

Chris Summers writes, “My DJ/live sound company, iShine Music Production, was recently awarded ‘Best of Weddings 2020’ by The Knot.”

Happy 2020, Class of 2009. I hope everyone’s year, and new decade, is off to a great start. Here are the exciting updates from our class.

Abbott Matthews is working for Facebook in São Paulo, Brazil, running the Latin American security operations center there. She reconnected with former EHS faculty member Thomas Anderson, who is now working for Avenues School in São Paulo. They have gotten together a couple times over caipirinhas and would love to hear from any EHS alums that find themselves in São Paulo. During a work trip to Bogotá, Abbott had the opportunity to see Amy and Brad Park, former Evans dorm parents, for dinner.

Phil Dujardin reports that he is still living in Crested Butte, Colo., working for Eleven Experience.

Haley Morgan got married in September to Max Tenney. He’s from Dallas, and they live in Austin (for now, she says). They got married in Charlottesville with just their families, and then had a New Years Eve party to celebrate their marriage with friends in Austin. Jeila Martin Kershaw, Claire Channell, Sarah Chase Webber, Mary Spencer Morten, Frances Stone, Jamie Utt, and Patrick Mealy were in attendance from EHS.

Alex Helm and his wife, Emily, are loving newlywed life in South Boston and are surviving the winter with hot pot and skiing. They got a puppy, Maisy, and say that if anyone is ever up in Boston you should let them know and they would love to grab some lobstah rolls and drinks!

From across the pond, Molly Seeley writes that she has moved to London to get her master’s in public administration and policy from the London School of Economics. On top of that, she released an EP. Way to go, Molly!

After many years of taking in and compiling our Class Notes I will be retiring my keyboard. Haley Morgan and Jeila Martin Kershaw have kindly volunteered to take over. Thank you, Haley and Jeila Martin!
