Holden's Harmonic Eddie Romero period 3

Use Somebody By Kings of Leon

In the song "Use Somebody" a man is looking around and only sees fake people. He wants someone real to be by his side that he can connect with. The Kings of Leon show this when they say "I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see painted faces, fill the places I can't reach" (line 1). This song relates a lot to Holden as through the book he is in search for a girlfriend. He wants a girl that will actually listen to what he says and connects with him. In the book he tries several times to get a girl like calling them, bringing them on dates, and tries to runaway with one. Holden says, "I started giving the three witches at the next table the eye again...all of a sudden, I leaned over and said, "'Would any of you girls care to dance?'"( Salinger 70). Holden chases after any women he can get at because he just wants someone he can relate too.

Runaway By Kanye West

In "Runaway" by Kanye West, Kanye is telling someone to runaway because he doesn't want that person to keep dealing with the phoniness of himself and the world. Kanye shows this when he says, "And I always find, yeah I always find, yeah I always find something wrong you been puttin' up wit' my s**t way too long" (line 1). This song relates to Holden as he is always trying to runaway from his problems. In the beginning of the book we find out Holden leaves Pencey for having bad grades. He is also running away from all the phonies and because he doesn't fit in with his family. When Mr.Spencer asked Holden if he has some concern for his future Holden responded, ¨´ I feel some concern for my future....but not too much, I guess´¨" (Salinger 14). Holden feels he can improve his life by running away from everyone.

Call Me Maybe By Carly Rae Jepsen

In the song "Call Me Maybe" , Carly´s chorus "I miss you so bad and you should know that so call me maybe" ( chorus 15-18 ) shows how attached she is with another person to the point where she always wants to talk to them. This is a similar situation to Holden as he always wants to give some a "buzz" throughout the book. Holden says, "I felt like giving somebody a buzz...but as soon as I was inside, I couldn't think of anybody to call" (Salinger 59). Every time Holden feels depressed or lonely he chooses to call someone. He always has a hard time trying to figure out who to call or just wants someone to call him. Holden just wants to be wanted by someone.

Talking to Myself By Eminem

Eminem's "Talking to Myself" is probably the best song that relates to Holden. In the song Eminem says, "Is anybody out there? It feels like I'm talking to myself no one seems to know my struggle and everything I come from" (Lines 5-6 ). Holden relates to this as he always says how lonely he is. He also says how no one understands him and how his "friends" are never there for him. Holden says, " One thing about packing depressed me a little. I had to pack these brand-new ice skates my mother had practically just sent me a couple of days before. That depressed me" (Salinger 51-52). Holden is depressed because his mother got him the wrong skates and he feels like she doesn't understand him or care for him.

Empire State of Mind By Jay-Z

This song relates to the type of life Holden wants to run away too. He wants to live in an exciting city. Jay-z says in the song, "New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of. There's nothing you can't do. Now you're in New York. These streets will make you feel brand new" (chorus). This perfectly describes Holden as when he gets to New York he feels like a new person and has new life. When Holden gets to New York he starts smoking and drinking acting as if he is now an adult. When Holden at the Lavender asks for, " Scotch and soda and told him not to mix it I said it fast as hell, because if you hem and haw, they think you're under twenty one" (Salinger 69). Now that he is New York Holden realizes he needs to grow up and act older.
