Allen Eagle Escadrille TWIB Notes January 18-24, 2021

Message from Dr. Obado

It's the third week of the 3rd quarter. While it's another relatively quiet week, we have some announcements that were sent via email last week and just a few announcements and reminders for future events. Scroll to the next page for a quick-view list of events this semester.

ALL-STATE, AREA, & REGION CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to Bryan Chen (clarinet) on a successful audition and selection as a Texas 6A All-State Musician. This is a very high honor being selected (for the third consecutive year). In addition, congrats to our ten Area and 53 Region Band members. The challenges of this year's Region process really showed the grit and determination of every student that followed-through on their auditions. Those students that advanced as a Region, Area, or All-State musician should be commended for their achievements.

REQUIRED CLASS MEETINGS: We will have ONE required meeting for all students this spring. This is for all current students regardless of band choice next year: attendance will be taken and will be a grade just as any after-school/before-school rehearsal or performance. Please see details and the Zoom link for At-Home students HERE.

  • Junior Class Meeting: Wednesday, January 27 (4:15-5:05 - AHS Ensemble Room or on Zoom: see link above)
  • Sophomore Class Meeting: Wednesday, February 10 (4:15-5:05 - AHS Ensemble Room or on Zoom: see link above)
  • Freshman Class Meeting: Wednesday, February 24 (4:10-5:00 - LFC Band Hall or on Zoom: see link above)

LEADERSHIP TRAINING STARTS THIS WEEK/DRUM MAJOR TRAINING STARTS NEXT WEEK: We will begin drum major training on Tuesday afternoons beginning next Tuesday, January 26th and general leadership workshops on Wednesday afternoons beginning this week. All events will be held in the AHS Ensemble Room from 4:25-5:15pm. Drum Majors will be instructed by our senior drum majors (Natalie Bendikson, Pulasthi Fernando and Ronnie Weaver), Dr. Obado, Dr. Knight, and Mr. Adams (Curtis MS, former Baylor University drum major). Leadership workshops will be instructed by Dr. Obado. If you can't make it in-person you can still participate through Zoom. Details and Zoom link can be found HERE.

  • Drum Major Tryouts: March 29, 31
  • SLT Tryouts: April 5

IN-PERSON QUARANTINE STUDENTS: AHS In-Person students that are quarantined at home will not be put in the Virtual Band Class. You will need to contact your director and ask them for a Zoom link so you can play your band music synchronously with the band. There is NO ASYNCHRONOUS TIME for In-Person students even if they are quarantined at home. You must Zoom in with the In-Person band class for the entire duration and at every rehearsal. LFC students will be put in the LFC Virtual Band Classes.

SOLO & ENSEMBLE CONTEST: We will NOT participate in the usual UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest in February. However, we will participate in a solo & ensemble contest held at Coppell HS on Saturday, May 15th. This gives you the entire semester to work on solo and ensemble literature. If you need to contact one of our teachers to get on a private lesson schedule, please click HERE.

Spring 2022 Trip: Orlando

While not a surprise, we will be unable to take a spring trip this year. Allen ISD students will only be taking overnight trips if the trip is tied to a tiered level of competition (such as a tiered UIL contest).

However, I am pleased to announce our Spring 2022 Trip to Orlando, Florida. This is not a required trip, but is available for any enrolled band students in 2021-2022. Please see the link below for preliminary details on the trip. The dates (subject to change) are March 10-14, 2022. We do not have a 2021-2022 School calendar at this point - the intended dates are the Thursday before Spring Break with a return on the Monday of break.

While this trip is approved, we do not have many details at this point. Here are some notes:

  • Cost: $1500-1800 - depending on flight, meals, amenities
  • Deposit/Payments: Begin April 2021- End February 2022 (this gives everybody plenty of time to save up for this trip)
  • Cancelations: Full refund (minus $100) if canceled by mid-November
  • Full refund: cancel by Nov 10
  • 75% refund: Nov 11-Dec 10
  • 50% refund: Dec 11 - Jan 10
  • 25% refund: Jan 11-Feb 10
  • No Refund: after Feb 10
  • Optional Trip Insurance: Families may choose to purchase additional insurance. If purchased, students may receive 75% of any costs returned to the travel agent regardless of cancelation date.

Students that make the 2021-2022 AHS Wind Ensemble may be assigned to the AHS Symphony Orchestra. The AHS Symphony Orchestra may be traveling to Chicago representing Allen, Allen ISD, and the state of Texas at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic in December 2021. There will be costs involved for those students traveling with the AHS Symphony Orchestra. Potential Wind Ensemble students that wish to go to both large trips should start thinking now how to make two trips happen. Any student selected to participate in the AHS Symphony Orchestra trip can contact Dr. Obado if there are potential travel/financial concerns - we want to make sure every student has a fair opportunity to go on their earned trip to Chicago.
