Isham Update January 2019

Happy New Year!

A very Happy New Year to all and a warm welcome back. The children appear to be settling in well after the Christmas break and have come back with good attitudes - keen to start their new projects. This term has more of a scientific focus, and a very green feel to it. The focus for each term is as follows:

  • Years 5 and 6: Save the Planet
  • Years 3 and 4: Journey into the Rainforest
  • Years 1 and 2: Grow Wild
  • Reception: Far, Far Away

There are many exciting opportunities already planned for each class, so keep an eye out for emails with more information. Also, don't forget to look at the calendar at the bottom of each monthly newsletter which contains all the available dates for the term.

A Message from the Executive Head

Welcome back and a very Happy New Year to you all! We are delighted that Isham finished 2018 on a high by making it to the top school in Wellingborough / Kettering and into the top 5 in the entire of Northants. You may well have seen or heard the news reports. The results we attain are testament to a very dedicated team of staff, children, governors and parents working together for similar outcomes. It is a privilege to lead such a team and I look forward to our continued success in the future.

As we move forward, we seek to develop ‘positive attitudes’ this year. Unfortunately, an increasing number of children use bad language on our playground, and, by the end of the last term, a small few appeared to be resorting to physical violence rather quickly. These incidents will not be tolerated. You will be contacted by email or by phone if this behaviour occurs. Where it does not immediately improve, your child will be on a lunchtime exclusion, meaning you must collect your child at 12pm and return them to school after lunch time is over, until a change can be seen in their break-time behaviour. I am hopeful you will talk to your children about this and that exclusions will be used rarely. This doesn't apply to the majority of the children who are, as we always say, a credit to the school.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Kirstin Howarth, Executive Head Teacher

Values Families Update

Well done to Beech family who became our Autumn Term winners of the 'Values' Trophy - they will receive their reward later this term. They have been very close to winning the trophy on a few occasions, so it is nice to see them finally take the top spot. Some children have made an excellent start to the term and there are already quite a few tokens in the tubes already!!!

A Few Reminders

In KS2, the door opens at 8.45 for an 8.50 start and, for KS1 and Reception, the door opens at 8.50 for a 9 o'clock start. We do ask that children enter school on their own to help develop their independence. In order for us to safeguard your children we do ask that parents refrain from entering school wherever possible; there is always a member of staff on each door for any messages that you may have or, alternatively, please visit the office. On those rare occasion where your child may be late into school please report them to the office so they can be registered.

Parking - please can we remind you of the importance of parking safely around school. The temporary traffic lights between Church Street and The Sorrels has not helped our very limited parking situation and we have received complaints of dangerous parking around the lights themselves. We do ask, that during busy times you are still considerate of other drivers and pedestrians, especially children, and park in the surrounding streets where possible.

For those of you that are not aware, Station Road (the Weetabix Road) will be closed from Monday 14th January until September due to work on the railway line. This will affect those of of you from Burton Latimer and Barton Seagrave who will need to find an alternative route into Isham. Please allow extra time for your journey to avoid arriving late to school.

FOIS were very busy over the festive period and have been doing a great job raising funds for different projects in school. They are always on the look out for volunteers to join the very friendly team, so, if you can spare a bit of time, do come and join the first meeting of 2019 which will be held in school on Monday 4th February at 9 o'clock. For more details of what FOIS have been up to recently, and what events they have coming up, please check out their Newsletter below or 'like' their Facebook page. A copy of the newsletter and the minutes from the last meeting can also be found on our website - www.ishamprimary.org.uk

Sports Update

The children have had a busy start to the term and are already preparing for some sporting events. Teams from Years 5 and 6 will be taking part in the District Sports Hall Athletics Competition on Thursday 10th January at KLV Indoor Arena and the Small Schools County Finals Football Tournament at Kingswood School in Corby on Monday 14th January. A small group of KS2 children will be taking part in New Age Kurling competition on Tuesday 15th January. Years 5 and 6 have also had a busy week learning to ride their bikes safely by taking part in the Bikeabilty programme.

KS1 and Reception will be focussing on Multi-Skills in their P.E. Lessons this term. Years 1 and 2 were looking at targets for their first lesson whilst Reception had a 'Room on the Broom' themed skills lesson.

It has been a great start to the term and I will keep you updated with all the results and up and coming competitions as the term progresses.

Dawn Jenkinson, Sports Co-ordinator
