Palm Sunday and Holy Week Our Savior Hawaii Online Sunday School

Welcome to Our Savior Hawaii's Online Sunday School! Today is Palm Sunday. It's the start of Holy Week, the special week before Easter. Let's learn and explore what makes it set a part from all the other weeks in the year.

  • What was the best moment of the last week for you? The worst?
  • How did you see God at work in the last week? What is your God sighting?

Matthew 21:1-11 NIV

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week. The week starts with a parade, but then things get serious and sad for Jesus and his friends. On Thursday, we hear about Jesus' last meal with his friends. On Friday, Jesus dies for us. On Sunday, just wait! It's an ever bigger celebration than today.

What do you imagine Jerusalem looked and sounded like when Jesus rode in on Palm Sunday? How would you welcome Jesus if He arrived in your town today?
Print and color.

Explore the stories of Holy Week using plants.

Find a fern frond, palm branch, or make a one out of paper.

It’s sort of like the palms that the people waved on Palm Sunday when Jesus rode through Jerusalem on a donkey. The people loved Jesus because he was their leader. Jesus was like the center stem of this plant. The people were like these leaves that came from the stem.

Find some grapes and discover what wheat looks like before it is bread.

These remind us of the final meal Jesus has with His friends. He broke bread and drank wine with his disciples. He said, "This is my body. This is my blood." Jesus knew what was coming the next day.

Find a rose or look up a picture of one and draw it.

We have to be careful with this one. It’s a rose. What’s on the stem of this plant? (thorns) What happens when you get poked with a rose thorn? (it hurts, you bleed) Did you know that Jesus wore a whole crown of thorns when he went to the cross? My head hurts just thinking about it. We feel sad for Jesus.

Find an Easter lily or look up a picture of one and draw it.

On Easter Sunday, churches are often filled with Easter lilies. The smell of Easter lilies seems to come straight from heaven! What do you notice about the shape of the flower? It kinds of looks like a trumpet announcing good news. The smell of Easter lilies reminds us of the happy news of Easter we celebrate next week.

Pray + Bless

Pray: Dear Jesus, We follow you this Holy Week. Thank you for your love and sacrifice. Amen.

Make the sign of the cross on the forehead of each person in your family and say, "Jesus died for you."
