Championship Match Recap 2019 Men's Tennis National Championship

MOBILE, Ala. — The NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship trophy will make a familiar drive tomorrow morning. For the sixth consecutive year, the trophy will travel from Mobile (Ala.) to Lawrenceville, Ga., as Georgia Gwinnett won its sixth-straight title with a 5-0 win over Xavier (La.) Saturday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

Georgia Gwinnett 5, Xavier (La.) 0

  • The Grizzlies started with a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
  • Rafael Coutinho and Valentino Caratini came away with an 8-2 win at Line 2 for the first point. The Grizzlies won 8-4 at line one and 8-5 at line three. That pair went 4-0 this week, and Coutinho was 3-0 at line three singles.
  • Mika Kosonen recorded the first singles point for the Grizzlies, which was his first finished match of the week.
  • Federico Bonacia scored the clinching point, winning 6-0, 6-3 at line two.

Georgia Gwinnett 5, Xavier (La.) 0

  • Federico Hererra Duran was named the Ward-Ballinger Award recipient for being the player that exhibited outstanding play, leadership and sportsmanship. Bonacia teamed with Ayed Zatar to go a perfect 4-0 at No. 1 doubles, and was 2-0 this week at No. 2 singles.
  • The sixth overall title by the Grizzlies moves them into a tie for third-most in NAIA men’s history.
  • This is the first time since 1971 a team has won six straight NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championships. Redlands (Calif.) won six consecutive titles from 1966-1971.
