Senior Buses Making a true impact within the community

Growing the Community One Senior at a Time

At the JCC, we have two available buses for our senior department, which has allowed us to expand our programming and increase participation in daily activities. We provide more than 120 programs per month and are still growing!

We provide more than 5,000 rides to our members annually with daily round-trip service for 30+ seniors. With our new buses we are able to create a split route, which allows for more efficient daily pick-up and drop-off. #happyseniors

We have grown during the past five years from 125 participants to more than 850!

The buses provide our senior community with opportunities for field trips, nutritious lunches, fitness and wellness classes, choir lessons, lectures, mah jongg, movies, the Senior Social Club, art classes, Core 4 Live, line dancing, sewing/knitting, various card games and classes, senior travel excursions, lectures, therapy dog experiences, brain function exercises, and SO MUCH MORE.

In 2017, the Senior Department received more than $150,000 in grants to support their programs and additional kosher meals. During this time our "Back Pack" program provided 1,200 nutritious kosher meals.

“I have no access to transportation, so without the bus I could not come to the JCC. Here I do oil painting, wellness classes, eat lunch and most importantly see old friends who I would not otherwise be able to see.”

The J is on a mission: help those who do not have access to balanced meals throughout the week and weekend in order to manage their nutritional needs.

According to Feeding America, seniors are the hidden hungry in our country and seniors in Texas are among the most at risk ranking states by level of food security.

In a recent study regarding households with seniors, 30 percent had to choose between food and medical care and 35 percent had to choose between food and paying utilities.

With the generosity from the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, we are now able to offer grab and go breakfast once a week and two Sunday brunches per month that include a wellness class.

“The bus picks me up and takes me to the JCC. It means the world to me. When I got sick and couldn’t come for about six weeks, I missed it very much. I especially missed playing Mah Jongg, having lunch and seeing my friends. I just love it here.”

The J is a wellness destination for our senior community. We offer senior fitness classes that are engaging and active as well as wellness options through our Lieberman Family Wellness Center and Baylor Scott & White Health partnership.

Our department won the JCCA Biennial Excellence Award for Improving Seniors’ Lives in the category of Programmatic Excellence and User Engagement.

Making social connections helps keep us all young and vibrant. A positive mindset leads to a happier, healthier life. We encourage this by taking trips both within the DFW area and nationwide to expand cultural horizons and social engagement.

“After surgery I was stuck in the house due to being unable to drive. I called the bus driver and said ‘come pick me up and save my life’ and he was there and helped me on the bus. I immediately felt better and it saved my sanity. On Mondays I knit with the other volunteers and we knit caps and booties that are donated to people at Parkland Hospital. On Tuesdays I come for the Social Club meetings and Wednesdays I sing in the chorus. Thursday is my favorite day because we have art. On Fridays I usually rest unless the JCC is having a Senior Shabbat Lunch with musical entertainment - that I won’t miss.”
