Medium of the Art/Technique of the Artist
The sculpture of Islandia, pictured above, is the first piece of art you see when you walk into the Harn Musuem of Art. I thought the sculpture was geniously placed as the first piece of artwork you see when you walk into the musuem because it forces the observer to think critically about the role of men and women in society. It also encourges observers to critically evalute art and the society in their daily lives. This piece of art was particularly striking to me because Flack, the artist, sculpted it in a way in which each detail is symbolic of something. Flack makes the sculpted angel topless to show that women are typically idealized for their body, the open hands to show that she is welcoming, etc. The sculpture communicated to me that I should always critically evaluate art that I see and try to relate what I observe to my personal life. The sculpture made me feel like I should take it upon myself to appreciate other people's struggles and ambitions, and not just my own.
Design of the Musuem
I took the above pictures in the part of the musuem with ceramics and pottery from many countries around the world. I found the design of the exhibit to be particularly appealing because after observing the artwork in the exhibit, you can see a beautiful Chinese garden outside. When I went outside into the garden, the air was 100% pure, fish were in the pond, and I felt at peace with myself. Being able to relax and reflect on my touring of the Harn in the garden was a very satisfying experience because of the overwhelming sense of tranquility I felt while I was in the garden.
